VERY cool! I especially was blown away by the school of rays. At first I thought they were some fish but then Kevin zoomed in and I realized they were rays.

Also

Sharpreader

Will ya protect me Gwen!?!?

gwen_o_lyn
03-07-2006, 01:35 PM
yeah they got some scary lookin sharks in there... I think I'd rather jump in with Gasper and Niko, the beluga whales. But at any rate, we can still hold hands cos I'm gonna be scared of anything bigger than me!! But it would be so much fun if we don't freeze to death!!

All together now...

Baby beluga in the deep blue sea,
Swim so wild and you swim so free.
Heaven above and the sea below, And a little whale on the go.

Baby beluga, oh, baby beluga,
Is the water warm?
Is your mama home with you so happy?

Way down yonder where the dolphins play,
Where you dive and splash all day.
Waves roll in and the waves roll out!
See the water squirtin’ out of your spout.

Baby beluga, oh, baby beluga,
Sing your little song, sing for all your friends. We like to hear you.

Baby beluga in the deep blue sea,
Swim so wild and you swim so free.
Heaven above and the sea below, And a little whale on the go.

When it’s dark, you’re home and fed,
Curl up snug in your water bed.
Moon is shining and the stars are out.
Good night, little whale, good night.

AND MRS. GWEN... I do NOT taste like chicken. I'm dark meat :)

Thanks for the compliments... it was my first shot using a still digital camera to take that video. Got lucky with the lady talking.

Those rays are all from Grays Reef, off the GA coast...there must be 75-100 of them, CRAZY!!! :o

gwen_o_lyn
03-07-2006, 10:27 PM
The video was great guys- thanks ;)
I don't think I was that lucky to have the lady talk on my visits there, however I did get to watch them feed on my last trip- now that is awesome. I have seen the talk in the coldwater exhibit for the belugas though.

I wish I got to watch them feed. I haven't been that lucky.

gwen_o_lyn

Scott

Ok, quick question.....you are free to walk around and look at what ever you like right? or are you locked into a guided tour when you visit?

ie...can ya just hang out all day? (hopefully they don't mind the drool...)

gwen_o_lyn
03-08-2006, 10:20 AM
Well for the behind the scenes tour with the ARC, I assume that will be a locked in guided tour.
However when you visit the aquarium as a regular visitor, you are free to roam and do whatever you want. They have staff all over giving presentations and helping answer questions.

kj_yoda
03-08-2006, 02:57 PM
That is one of the greatest things about the GA Aquarium. There is one central hub and each gallery is an appendage of that hub. You can go in any order you want.

Scott
03-08-2006, 03:30 PM
cool. just wanted to make sure as I plan to get there on a Thrs, spend that Friday bumming in the aquarium until the conference begins. Then bum some more on Monday before I leave again. now I just need to get the tickets for that Friday and Monday. :-)

oh, and I need to remember to get another card for my camera....I think I'll fill the little 512MB card that I currently have. :)

kj_yoda
03-08-2006, 03:36 PM
What type of memory does your camera take? I may have some extra cards laying around.

Scott
03-08-2006, 04:13 PM
compact flash, I have some smaller cards...128, 64, 32. But I figured I'd look at another 512 or maybe even a 1GB. Camera is a Canon PowerShot A80. Would love to get a nice Digital SLR though.

kj_yoda
03-08-2006, 04:19 PM
i've got 2 x 256 cards that I could sell you for about $20 total

Reefbaby
03-13-2006, 02:49 PM
So, for a "behind the scene" tour, how does one make this special arrangement? I'm just thinking that if we go to our conference in the fall, I would LOVE to do a tour!

gwen_o_lyn
03-13-2006, 03:06 PM
It wouldn't be easy. I know if you donated a huge chuck of change to the aquarium, then you get one for that. The ARC as a whole donated a lot of money and plus pretty much the entire club bought annual passes, not to mention a few of our club members work there, so that's why we are lucky to get this opportunity.

If I hear anything, then I'll let you know. I'll try and remember to ask about that tomorrow night. Kevin- help me remember please ;)

kj_yoda
03-13-2006, 03:44 PM
You want me to be your note pad? LOL. I'll try to remember.

Reefbaby

Gwen... I remembered Reefbaby's question
So, for a "behind the scene" tour, how does one make this special arrangement? I'm just thinking that if we go to our conference in the fall, I would LOVE to do a tour!

Reefbaby,

You can get a tour for $50.00 per person. Call to ask questions.

Here is a quote from one of the GA Aquarium Volunteers, and ARC member:
"The general one hour group tours are available to anyone for $50 a person (not just Founder Members) - and are very good and show alot of what you guys saw."

Reefbaby
03-15-2006, 04:19 PM
Thanks Kevin!!! So, you two, was it worth it? Would you pay $50 for it??

gwen_o_lyn
03-15-2006, 08:38 PM
Definitely!! I loved it ;)
The top of the tanks is much different than the bottom- so much to see! Like the reef sharks for example, they stay on top during the day and you can't see them from the main display. And the skimmer room was incredible!

kj_yoda
03-15-2006, 09:15 PM
i completely agree with Gwen

kj_yoda
03-16-2006, 07:58 AM
I think it would be REALLY cool to see things during the day when the inhabitants are more active.

Reefbaby
03-16-2006, 08:13 AM
Didn't you go during the day?

kj_yoda
03-16-2006, 08:57 AM
No... our tour was after hours. It was amazing though
