I know that some types turn black as they mature. how old is this clown?
It also may be due to possible changes in it's environment maby? thats just a guess though. Probably the first sentance.

I know clowns that host in zoas can develop black spots, but they're usualy n the belly area, and that doesn't appear to be spots.

They are the same color as my ORA Oscillarus. They are very beautiful!

I had this happen to mine when I first got them, my lighting was very weak and this is when I had just started. I upgrade my lighting to VHO and noticed that the browning had disappeared.
Not saying that the lighting is the reason but it might be another factor other than maturing. All in all, the fish are going to be fine. This is not a sign of anything harmful to fish.

i just saw a ton of this type of clown at an AWESOME fish store in kentucky (no i don't live in kenucky). Some of them looks darker in there back end, kinda like yours. But i didn't see any that blackish, besides a per black clown but thats completely different :p

I purchased a nice bright orange false clown and now it is dark red/orange with a near black back. He hangs out near the surface and is always in bright light. I watched a show where they showed hammer heads tanning and becoming darker, I figured thats what happened to my clown. I like his new look better!

My brother is visiting and he noticed the wide balck edges on my ocellaris. He wondered if it might turn black because the black edges are rather wide on mine. He knows a lady who raises black ocellaris and they start out as orange.
