Come to find out that the filters that came with my RO system were 10 micron,when 0.1-1 micron is recommended.The difference was staggering.
Had to manually remove the green algae,plus treat for a red hair algae bloom.
My Kole tang won't touch the stuff,but I noticed if I get the green algae short enough,my blue-legged hermits will eat it.Gotta bring it down to a nub.
My last resort was to remove and scrub individual pieces of live rock,the ones that were the worst.
An addition of Chaetomorpha to my system was also a step in the right direction.I've heard cutting back on the lighting cycle,but I just can't do that to my Corals.

You might consider leaving the lights off for a couple of days. Your corals will be fine and you may wipe the HA out for good.

I tried the scrubbing thing and I didn't find it all that effective. It was a lot of work, I kept messing up my aquascape and the darn stuff kept coming back.

Same issue here carmie. My nano is a complete algae disaster; it is basically just a copepod and amphipod breeding ground now.

How did you remove all of yours gonzo?

I can't stress enough cutting back photoperiod to let your clean-up crew catch up with the growth. That, use ro/di water to start, have some herbivores and don't over feed and you will beat it! Best wishes and know that it's not hopeless.

Check your alkalinity... get your pH on the high end of normal.

Oh, i should probably mention that there is nothing in the tank. No fish, hermits, inverts, etc., only stuff that came with live sand and rock. I will keep what you both said in mind however, when i finish setting up the 100 gallon (http://www.talkingreef.com/forums/member-tank-projects/2838-samuels-new-huge-tank-3.html). I will have a robust cleanup crew in my 100, i just ran out of money to keep supporting the nano as well :) Thanks though, and i will try you suggestions if i see the stuff appear in the big tank.

Astri, if there's nothing in the tank, for Pete's sake, cover it unlit for a week to 10 days! The coraline and such will be fine. That'll kill off the hair algae in one step! There's nutrients still there attributing to the problem (I suspect something is decomposing), but a black out will kill off the algae big time!

I will do so. I actually left the lights off for today anyhow. Good to know the coraline will be okay. :)
