WON Pro-Heat LCD Digital 1000W Titanium Heater - Marine Depot - Marine and Reef Aquarium Super Store (http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=WB1335)

Hey what do you guys/gals think about this heater? Over kill for a 75 gallon? I love the fact that it has a built in thermometer.

I seems to me that 1000 watts is more than you need. I really like my temperature controller. When my single phase controller went out (I used it year around switching from using it for my chiller in the summer to my heater in the winter) I bought a dual phase eBay: BRAND NEW DUAL STAGE LCD CONTROLLER FOR CHILLER/HEATER (item 190107372752 end time May-03-07 10:08:10 PDT) (http://cgi.ebay.com/BRAND-NEW-DUAL-STAGE-LCD-CONTROLLER-FOR-CHILLER-HEATER_W0QQitemZ190107372752QQihZ009QQcategoryZ117 433QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) on Ebay. It is great!

1) Way more too much overkill, unless you live in really cold place that has no central heat.

2) If that controller or sensor probe ever fails, you will cook your tank really fast.

3) A thousand watts turning on and off is a big load on your circuit breaker.

It was the only one I saw that showed the actual temp of the water seperate from the heater which I liked. They make 3 smaller models but they only come in 50, 75 and 100 watts.

The problem I am having is I believe my current heater must be sticking. I is set to 78 degrees, however the tank sometimes reaches 82 degrees in the middle of the day, then I have to unplug the heater and turn my fans on, but during the night the temp in the tank can drop to as low as 74 degrees. So I am looking for a dependable heater. Any sugestions?

good point on the prob failing, never thought of that. You could end up with fish soup.

Are chillers loud? Do they put off alot of noise?

How could ya hear it with triplets!!!

I have a drop in that is like a 747 in my living room and then another inline that you can minimally hear.... so, I guess it kind of depends on the make/model.

Aqua Logic Cyclone Chiller 1/5 HP CY-2 with Temperature Controller (Saltwater Aquarium Supplies > Chillers > Drop-In > 1/4 HP & Less ) (http://www.marinedepot.com/ps/ps_ViewItem~idProduct~AL1213K.html)

This is the drop in we have. Instead of the water moving through the unit the coils are dropped into the water itself.

My chiller is a drop in too and I think it is pretty loud. But not as loud as a 747. :) Of course my husband complains that I won't turn the fan in my car up past low or the exhaust fan in the kitchen on because I can't stand the sound. Thinking about it, I guess it is not as loud as the exhaust fan.

You could consider getting a temp controller, mine keeps my tank within a degree of the set point for each device although you can set the variance to be whatever you want. So for instance I have the chiller set to cool to 80 degrees and it comes on as soon as the temp hits 81 and turns off again when it is 80. I have the heater set to 79 degrees and it comes on as soon as the temp falls to 78.

Are you sure that your temp is not rising because of other devices (pumps, lights) throwing off heat? Is it always at the same time of day? For instance my chiller does not usually run during AC season until the lights are on unless the house has gotten especially hot for some reason.

Tony,
i wanted to welcome you back man, its been a while hope life and the family are treating you good.

and here is my 2 cents.
i will say, i used a titanium heater once (that broke 2 weeks after i got it)
they are cool for backing alot of watts into a small area, but i have to say i am not a fan of the temp probe unless you can find a way to securly mount it...

I have my temp probe woven into the grate in my sump. I also saw a cool idea about gluing various sizes of rigid tubing inside the sump to hold probes, heaters and other equipment securely.

Walrus, im sure we many hear would like to know why you feel it is "garbage".
simply stating it is garbage is not extremely helpful, let help educate everyone as to why you feel this way..

other than it being over powered for this tank, and that the temp probes can be an issue if not secured properly... what other problems do you have with it?

Sorry I was so brief, but I have problems posting sometimes and I've been tired of typing long replies and then losing it.

I went through quite a few of these heaters because of my water volumes. Whatever material that it is made from, it is not true titanium because every single one that I had developed rust. The seal between the heat rod and the power line seems to be a hazard.......I was shocked a few times. The controller is not that accurate and the only way I was able to my temperature properly was to turn the controller all the way up and then plug it into a Medusa. The suction cup for the probe never did stick properly from day 1. The claim that the controller will shut of if the probe is out of water may not entirely true according to my experimentation, I believe that the probe actually has to dry.

thanks FW, like i mentioned, min fried out in a few weeks so i didn't get to test it very long, but i will say your results are not uncommon.

in short i have heard mixed reviews on them.. im staying with my Jager and Stealth heaters, they both server me well.. :)

Well I ended up buying one of these 300 watt models with the external controller:
https://www.petsolutions.com/Titanium-Heaters+I12516830.aspx

I put it in my sump, but I dont think the thing ever kicks on. I set it to 78 degrees and my two thermometers both read around 75-76 degrees. I was thinking about moving it to the over flow to see if maybe since the sump is such a small area of water that it would kick on for a little longer in the over flow. I didnt see the last couple of threads about your opions on the heaters until after i ordered this. I may send it back and get a different type if putting it in the over flow doesnt make a difference.

If I have the heater in the sump, where should the temp prob go? In the sump also or main tank? I have the temp prob in the main tank maybe thats the problem with the heater not kicking on.

Jag heaters are the best I've used. I just had my 4th Jager arrive in the mail today for the new tank. I wouldn't trust any other heater without a controller in place.

I also had a Won titanium fail on me and almost cook my tank.

What kind of thermometers? They could be off. I have both my heater & probe in my sump. For the size of my tank, 54 gallons, my sump is rather small, only adding about 10 gallons.
