Hi kittenlol,

:welcome: to TR.
I've never kept one of these but it is usually not a good sign when they drop legs. Here is a :bump: for you, hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

What is your water parameters. A melting star can be cause by poor/declining water quality.

Thanks guys, Im not sure what the parameters are its my boyfriends tank i was trying to help him, but the water is clear , although green algi is starting to cover everything and red slimy stuff, i dont know much about saltwater tanks only ever had a gold fish, the brittle star moves around just fine like nothing is wrong with him i guess we'll just have to wait and see.

there are MANY things that "might" cause this.
and while i admire your ambition to help, there is only so much we can offer unless you are prepared to become the SW expert.. :)

we would have to ask about acclimation procedures, and have you go though testing the water.. the other issues is that not being the primary observer of the tank there are many things you may not be aware of.

Don't some stars reproduce this way? by dropping arms? but i doubt thats what it is. i'm just bumping a little bit and spitballing the above thought.

i remember when i was littler i found a starfish on the beach and put him in a little container and was gonna take him home. little did i know then how hard it was to keep these things. the next day he lost an arm, so i put him back and he crawled to the water. i'm sure he probably made it, it was probably the water quality in a small container of fresh seawater.

i recently was looking at pics and learned it was a sand sifter.

so it may e water quality like the others said.

sorry i'm rambling, haha
