I was just curious about this topic. Can tangs currently be tank bred or aquacultured? or, is this one of those animals whose captive breeding is still a mystery.
its is one of those that captive breeding is currently not possible..
i believe they are open water spawners, making captive breeding very difficult (currently not possible)

I haven't heard of it. My guess is that they jsut aren't comfortable enough in our little tanks since they are used to swimming for miles.

i seen a show where they were showing Convict Tangs. they showed how the female will sprint up about 20 ft and broadcast her eggs, then a group of males would be right behind her to broadcast their sperm. the main reason i believe theres currently no Tangs being captive breed is they need so much space to spawn. i have heard that some huge aquarium has had Tangs successfully spawn, but i have not seen any documented reports. would be cool to know the details if it did happen. :)

i try to do that every friday night.
ive never seen it, although in books they do tell me in the largest of aquariums its possible. Unproven without a happy snap its as good as gospel.

So what we should really do is build a huge huge huge Talkingreef funded aquarium and be the first successfully spawn Tangs in capticity and give one free to every Talking Reef member. :-)
