View Full Version : let me make sure i understand this correctly... Ocelot199 02-20-2007, 02:10 PM I know theres another thread about attaching frags to rocks, but i just want to make sure i'm not about to kill my new frogspawn frag.
Its actually okay to apply superglue to the base of the stalk of the coral to stick it to a rock? This won't like, hurt the coral or poison the water or anything? Right now it's just kinda balanced between two rocks, and keeps getting knocked over... and I want it to stay put, but I also don't want to murder my poor little coral.
Also, is it normal for hermit crabs to hang out on the stalk? I've got two blue-leg hermits who won't leave this frogspawn alone... they don't seem to be doing any damage, but since this is my first coral I'm not really sure. wwest 02-20-2007, 06:26 PM Yes you can use super glue gel like that, however frogspawn being so top heavy and awkward you might want to use something else. Not really sure what to use i have always just stuck them in between two rocks. Maybe someone else can jump in on this.. lReef lKeeper 02-20-2007, 06:27 PM on the frogspawn i like to use plumbers putty instead of superglue gel. you can get it in the plumbing dept. of any hardware store. it is a two part epoxy that you can "mold" around the base of the coral and to the rock that you want the corals to be placed on.
the hermits are probably just eating something on the skeleton, and will probably leave it alone when the food is gone. Paintbug 02-21-2007, 09:40 AM i use superglue gel a lot. it doesnt work to good for softies most the time though. they usually just let go of the glue in a couple of days, and just end up drifting around LOL. anyway, for the hammer, i agree with lReef lKeeper. i use a 2 party epoxy putty for larger stony corals. i use the Aqua Stick brand that can be found at most LFS, many people use plumbers putty as well. it dries underwater nicely, but sometimes it can be tricky to get it to hold. after some practice, its simple. K, this is the second time I've seen the plumber's putty suggestion. Do you mean plumber's putty like in THIS (http://www.wmharvey.com/prod/cat4/pep/putty.php) link. The last person never got back to me to let me know if this was indeed the product they were talking about.
I contacted the company to ask about safety and I think the peeps almost choaked. They thought I had the putty product mixed up with their two part epoxy which is safe. I again said that I thought it was the the putty like in the link and they said there is not a chance it is saltwater safe over time.
Are we talking about the same product when we say Plumber's Putty? iglowce 02-21-2007, 01:32 PM i use the one that is sold at LFS. its two part. one looks green, the other one is purple. you mix it together. then attach to the base of ur LPS and pressure it onto rock. and there u go! the water make be cloudy around that area due to some epoxy in the water. i would use a pippette and manually siphon it out so it wont get on top of my other corals and to help wt the skimmer trying to get rid of them. thats all. gluck wt everything =] Paintbug 02-21-2007, 02:19 PM K, this is the second time I've seen the plumber's putty suggestion. im thinking its this Plumbers Epoxy Putty (http://www.wmharvey.com/prod/cat4/pep/epoxy.php). it clams to be NSF certified for use in potable water applications. i dont use it myself, i get a Two Little Fishies Aquastik brand from somewhere online when i make an order. Ocelot199 02-21-2007, 02:24 PM Thanks for all the advice. I would never have even though that it would be alright to use glue in my tank... seems strange to me.
:) lReef lKeeper 02-21-2007, 06:22 PM i use the 4oz that comes in the plastic tube on the link from Paintbug (at the bottom). works wonders for LPS's, but is a little tricky when trying to get it to stick on the first few tries. once you get the hang of it, it is a piece of cake !! good luck. it is the same thing they sell at LFS's, but is less then half the price at HD.
hope this helps Phurst 02-23-2007, 01:31 PM Aquamend (http://polymericsystems.com/aquamend.htm), available from Home Depot, is exactly the same as the 2 part green epoxy at the LFS, except it's $3.00 a tube. I've used it extensively witn no problems at all. Paintbug 02-23-2007, 01:55 PM i just watched a vid with Eric Borneman, he says he uses a brand called RectorSeal here Rector Seal - The Name You've Trusted for Years (http://www.rectorseal.com/index.php?site_id=1&product_id=199) . he said Lowes carries it. |
