i have done some research on the web about these worms which is somewhat inconsistent. i was hoping someone could shed some more light about personal experience and care. it seems that phyto is a good food and they are somewhat difficult. what else should i know before purchase

I think you've got it, they are a bit difficult, may require feeding of phytoplankton.

When checking specimens for purchase make sure they react quickly. They should be able to fully retract the feather top quickly and completely, and it should return to normal within a short period of time after the threat has passed.
