Hey all, I have a 65 gallon tank its 48x18x18, and i was looking through craigslist and I found these, I wonder if this would work in a pendant type setup.

400w GE Metal Halide multi-tap hi-bay lamps. $50/ea or $425/lot (http://denver.craigslist.org/tls/264740194.html)

lemme know what ya think?

they WILL work, but they will also have to be hard wired into your breaker box. probably on a seperate circuit breaker.

I'm not so sure they would work, I mean i guess they could but those lights are going to put off alot of heat for a 65gallon. They look like warehouse lighting. Im not even sure you could wire them in like that. I don't think i would fool with them IMO.

guess i should have said that i would not recommend them either. i know a few people that have used them, but not that wattage on such a small tank. they used them on 500 - 1200 gallon systems.
if i am not mistaken ... and i could be, but i know they would have to be wired into the houses electrical system, probably even 220. (not plug and play).

yes, there are some DIY projects for this, but they are not easy not are they really efficient. as they require advanced electrical work

the other thing to keep in mind is the spectrum and age of these bulbs...do you really know either?
