I just got my Hydor Model 3 today and here's my initial rundown:

Cost: $40 at Dr.'s Foster and Smith (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=15955&inm=1&N=2004+22788+2035)
Rated at 850 gph @ 6.5 watts.

Installation was a snap. I have provided a bunch of photos of the box, pump, disassembled parts and size references. That's a US quarter for size reference.

When the pump starts, there's a possibility of rattle from the impeller blade because it can slide the length of the metal shaft it turns on, but it did not cavitate the way my Seios do on startup.

More pics including one of my tank with a Seio on the left and a Koralia on the right for reference.

My clown fish cowering under the might of the new pump have clearly voted with their presence. :D

The thing I like alot about these over Seio's is that you can keep them closer to the surface since the more open design doesn't tend to create intake vorticies that cause "sucking" sound and micro bubbles.

I think I'm going to get another. 2x850 is wicked turbulent for a 25g, but they'll rule when my 60 cube goes up.

Hello. If you go here (http://www.talkingreef.com/forums/pump-current-generators/3145-new-hydor-koralia-power-head.html) you will read some problems that I had with that product and also you can read the answer of the technician of the Hydor. A friend of mine has the same problem with me.

Can you please tell me if your pump works normally or not?

As far as I can tell, the pump works as designed. Flow comes out the front in a pattern similar to my Seio, though it seems only slightly more intense than my 620 gph Seio, so it may not be as forceful.

The impeller does shoot out and clatter briefly on startup. I don't use a wave maker so this is not an issue for me. However, I have never found a power head that uses the standard magnet-driven impeller that doesn't clatter on startup from the magnetic field ramping up and rattling the impeller magnet.

I didn't take note of the impeller's magnetic power specifically. The magnets are probably fairly weak on the impeller to improve inertia which would allow lower power. Power heads designed for greater lifting power and water pumps like Mags have stronger magnets to get more push.

Just a heads up, Fosters & Smith have the Koralia powerheads on sale. Of course I didn't post this till after I placed my order. :tongue2: They seem to sell out fast. Koralia Powerheads (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=15955)

Drs F & S is one of the best run businesses we reefers have and I highly recommend them. NO, I have no connection with them other than being a former WI resident and an on going customer.

Here's my latest purchase (just completed). I wanted 2 Koralia pumps, one 3 and one 4. The 4 was out of stock. I instant messaged with a rep and was told to order both and they would send the out of stock pump when it comes in at no further shipping cost.

That's service. Thank you Drs F & S!

Dick I wholeheartedly agree with you. Dr. F&S has the best return policy I have ever seen. I ordered 2 bulbs from them for a fixture I had. Turns out the bulbs weren't the problem the ballast was bad. They told me to just return the bulbs and they would refund my money. My LFS has a strict no return policy on bulbs.

Wow I knew the Koralia would sell out quick. I placed my order yesterday. I almost waited till today. Of course I picked up 2 more buckets of Reef Crystals and only paid $15.99 shipping. Fed Ex guy is going to hate me... again.

That's the very reason I ordered a heavy TV online.... so someone else could carry it up 3 flights of stairs!

Being from WI, their home base and my former home, I've been in their operation several times and must say, I'm impressed. They go out of their way to hire good, well informed people and then put them through a continuous training program. Not at all like your LFS. These people are well paid in comparison to LFS wages. They run their warehouse and phone center 24/7, the last I heard. In my humble opinion, they are one of, if not, the best on line operation for the pet industry.

I buy a lot of my dry goods from them and have exchanged and returned things. They have always been great. I bought Reef Crystals on sale for $31. My LFS sells that bucket for $70. I do wish they had a better selection on some items.

I bought my live rock at liveaquaria and it was as good as advertised. Even with the shipping i bought 70 pounds of rock for $328 and the shipped weight was 80 pounds. I sure can't buy live rock locally for that price. The one piece of live rock i bought locally has glass anemones on it.

Got my Koralia 4 today. Love the flow. Now I just need to order 2 more to replace the Seio 1500. I like the looks of the Koralia's, not as bulky as the Seios. May have to replace the Seio 620's in the nano. The lower wattage is nice also.

anyone know if you can put the Koralia's on on wave makers or controllers?
maybe something like this
Ocean Pulse Duo Wavemaker: Premium Aquatics (http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=JBJ-WM-01&Category_Code=Wavemaking)

i dont see why not, Rob. the ones i have are the 1200gph (4's). even when unplugging and replugging they are quieter on startup than any other pump i have had. i believe they are actually testing them on wavemakers as we speak.

Here's a partial quote from another thread alluded to in post 5 of this thread.

Then I put it on in a simple wave maker and I saw that the impeller
came out and hit on to the plastic cover and then insert to the normally
position every time that the wave maker turn on the pump. After that I
heard a little noise. That noise does not appear continuously but only
some times when the wave maker turns on the pump.

“Our patent is the unidirectional start, the impeller come out of the motor and come in in the right sense.
For this reason with a normal wave maker that gives on or off, every
time the pump has to start with that principle. That kind of wave maker could be dangerous also for the fishes, they could come into the chamber impeller when the pump is in off. We are studying a new wave maker for our Koralia, it doesn't come in off directly but decreasing gradually the frequency of the turns of the
impeller. In this way the impeller will be never stopped and the fishes can not come inside of the chamber impeller.”
It sounds as though they have found a variable powered wave maker or are developing their own.

I received my K-3 about a week ago and have to say it pretty awesome for the money. A K-4 was back ordered, should be getting that soon.

does anyone know of any comparisons between the nanostreams and these..

im tempted to just get the Koralia because my LFS has them (and i prefer to buy from them)

None of the LFS have them around here.

Rob,

I was considering Nanostreams until someone pointed me here Nano-Reef.com - The source for nano reef aquarium information (http://www.nano-reef.com/) and said to search for Nanostream. Apparently the retaining clips on the Tunze's have a cheap construction and can snap off turning your nanostream into a water-jet bola which will bash corals and other things in the tank.

Since the recall replaced my Hydor 3, I'm quite happy with them. I have a Model 3 and Model 1. Excellent mounts. Easy to work with. Low power.
