I have a cylinder shape foam piece the covers the cylinder shape column where the water goes into that leads to the pvc and then the pump. Should I throw this out and put something else in there? The cylinder shape tube in the overflow has slits in it where the water goes into, is this good enough on its own? I am afraid this foam piece is going to be a nitrate factory.

you can keep it as long as you replace it regularly
i replace mine about once a month or if can wash it it may go two months.

just check it every few days and clean it as needed, i check it as part of my big weekly maintenance work i do

ok good I do a bi-weekly water change and rinse it out in my bucket of old seawater that just came out of the tank.

that works, you really just want to get the debris out and make sure it doesn't get clogged. its also good to do a visual inspection of the overflow tube at this time too.. just to keep an eye on it.. :)
