Question: I know that I have read about a solution that you can put in a tank before live stock that will clean away any grime and residue left over from a previous use. I believe it was something with chloride but I am not sure. I have some equipment and a 45 gal tank that I would like to heavily clean before I use it. I know some have suggested vinegar but is this the only way? Of course I will be giving it a thorough rise before use;)

you will be amazed at what you can do with some hot water and vinegar.. :)
that is what i always use to clean my tanks.

and when i need to do some sterilization i use a highly diluted mixture of bleach

White vinegar is the safest way. It is pretty effective. Yes, dillute it.

I think that you are referring to hydrochloric acid (HCL) or muriatic acid. Some people use this to do the same. Personally, I get enough pollution working in Gustavo's acrylic shop. I don't like acids (not since my school daze...er days) anyways!

I use good ole surfactant/fragrence free bleach.
