im working on building my new sump and im looking at pumps. from reefcentral, i think i need roughly 500gph. i was looking through pumps, and i think the Mag 7 barely can do what i need, but apparently the quiet one 3000 works. theres about 4 feet to pump and elbows and other things.but in the end it comes up just a little strong, but that can be dialed down by diverting some of the water somewhere else.

anyway what i wanted to ask was if anyone has experience with the Quiet One 3000 or just Quiet ones in general. is it good, what problems do they have? anything would be great.

I have two Quiet One 3000's one as a return pump, and the other runs my SCWD. They have been running for about 4 months, and so far they have been flawless. I added a gate valve to the return pump so I could dial in the return rate right where I wanted it. I am happy so far.

ok thats good to know. i will probably go with it since it takes less energy than the mags...

Less energy is good - your parents will appreciate it when they pay the electric bill. :) I changing out my powerheads in the DT for Tunze 6025 (as soon as someone gets them in stock) and figure they will pay for themselves in a year and 4 months.

yeah i guess its the obvious choice...
1people have said they are not bad
2less energy than the equivelent mag
3 30 gph more than the mag
4 cheaper than the mag...
whats not to love?
yeah i use a seio, and i already worked hard convining my mom to let me get it..with my money too...so shed never let me get the tunze

The new 6025's are about $65, far cheaper than most Tunze. They use 7 watts vs the 60 & 70 the current powerheads use.

ohh i guess maybe i should research that..from what iknow..i guess its the bigger ones..they are like 100 bucks ..or not even that cheap. but i think i am satisfied with my seio..its rated at 8 watts

I've used Quiet Ones before and we sold them at the lfs I worked for. We joking called them "hot ones" because they put off so much heat, but this was ten years ago, they may have changed the design. Mine ran for many years before I sold it.

from what i hear, they are much cooler now, cooler than mag drives at least

well if heat is an issue with the pumps, i think that will be okay for me cause here in san francisco, it doesnt get too hot, and i run a heater on my tank too

heat from pumps is more of an issue on submersible than it is on external..

but i am going to run the pump submersed, unless i should run it externally for some reason..but i was planning on submersing it

submerged there are
- less chance of leaks (or at least less mess)
- more chance for heat related issues
thats about it, im sure there are others but thats off the top of my head ;)

Hey Key, keep us updated on what you choose and how you like it. If you go with a Quiet One, please take a temperature reading after the tank gets room temp, and then after the pump has run for a day. I ran mine externally on a 120 and it raised the temp around 6-8 degrees. On hot summer days I had to shut off my pump and use a powerhead. I've been afraid to buy once ever since, but it certainly was a powerful, quiet, and well-made pump.

I'm going to be in the market for a new pump in a few months. I'll definitely lean towards a Quiet One if yours runs cool (relatively speaking). Like I said, it was a great pump, just hot.

well you may get to buying a new pump before i get to it, cause i dont even have my sump built, and im still in my trying-to-convince-parents-i-wont-flood-the-house phase...so yeah

Here's another thumbs up for the 3000. I have 2, though currently I only use them for mixing up my saltwater and pumping it to my tanks. My complaint is not the heat, but the noise. While they aren't the noisiest pumps I've ever heard, they are also NOT what I would call Quiet! They do offer a good bang for the buck, though.

FYI - I could not use them in my 240. If the power went out for just a moment, the 3000s were not strong enough (or had enough head room) to resume pumping against the flow of water coming back into the sump. I don't think will be a problem on a 60, though. Overall - thumbs up.

well what is the configuration it has to pump? like is it a lot of turns and really tall? cause they thats definately a problem ...

The pumps had about 7' - 8' total, with about (4) 90 degree turns, and about 5' of height. The pumps had no problem with this, only when it was trying to compete with backflow. If I waited for the back flow to stop, then turned the pumps back on, there was no problem. But most of the power outages we have here only last a few seconds. Had this happened when I was away, I'm sure the pumps would have burned up fighting the back flow. Worse, the tank's filtration would be off-line. Yikes.

Most people use those in-line "things" (sorry, I don't know what they are called) to prevent back flow (one-way flow valves, maybe), but I try not to rely on something that could fail. I'd rather have a sump big enough to handle any back flow. And a pump that won't be effected by this.

well yeah i planned that into my sump build, but i would be worries that the power would turn bck on before it can finish draining with the siphon hole. i wont be pumping as hi either...6feet total for me. but thanks a lot for your experiences. its good to know. btw, its a check valve...

You're welcome.

Check valve - how awesome is that - a 14 year old just taught a 43 year old something! Well done!
