i fully submerse mine in the water too. i dont know what those "do not submerse beyond this point" line means.

I think they work a lot better if you put them all the way under. They seem to have trouble regulating the temperature if they're not all the way under...

This is just a liability protection statement.

I have always fully submersed them. These are awesome heaters and the only ones I would trust in my reef tanks since I don't have a temp controller.

I agree with all of the above. These are good heaters. HOWEVER - I have used these for years and years. I too was shocked when I read the warning. A phone call to Dr. Fosters & Smith yeilded no help. I tried contacting the company, to no avail. So I assummed what everyone else did, and continued using them fully submersed. Then 2 weeks ago, the one I use in my 55 gallons salt mixing container stopped working. When I went to check why - I found it filled with water. Thank God I unplugged it first! I could see no cracks in the unit, so I assume it leaked from the top dial or power cord.

That said, I continue to use them, as this was the first out of 10 or so I've used over the last decade that has leaked. But I am now heading their warnings and no longer fully submersing them - just to be safe.

wow...so thats what happened...well i have a water turtle and her tank was running an old school ebo jager( so old it just had a Hi and Lo dial with no numbers) and that was fully submerged for about 12 years..or a little longer till we upgraded her last year to a 20g long with a new ebo jager because the old one just couldnt warm the water anymore..
but i guess now we all know why it says dont submerge

in aus we dont have such markings on the jags, they are completely sealed & submersable by design. Tighter than a crabs buttocks.

And how is it that you know intimate details about crabs? :wow:

Don't worry about Ebos, I have always submersed them with no problem.

we've always submerged our E-J's. i wonder if the new ones since the company was sold are different...you'll notice that they are now simply "Jager"...IIRC, Eheim now owns them.

Yes - about 2 years ago they changed design. This is when the "submerisble line" appeared. I agree is probably just a cya move - but I have had one of these new ones leak recently.
