View Full Version : oh darn Victoria 12-18-2006, 09:41 PM Ok I returned home after a week and yes the unthinkable happened:no: . I have lost two corals completely and 2/3 of another. I believe it is RTN but I really don't know why?? Unless it was the red bug treatment I did three weeks ago??. Man it really bums me out:( . You work so hard to get your tank as close to perfection as you can, and BAM it happens to you. There is a bright spot (Brain) my brittle star population has exploded. I guess it the food chain thing. All our tanks are a delicate balance of life. And that's why not everyone can do it.
I think after it stops, I'm going to do a little redecorating. I wonder if our tanks peak??:geef: Well mine did. I wonder what I can learn???? Anyway if this has happened to you, come share my grief.... Small Fry 12-18-2006, 11:38 PM OH NOEs!!! :( this is the totm right vic???(do u have any other tanks actually??)
I hope you can pull through this, your tank is (was) beautiful. Im sure at some point everyone has/will be through this, you'll pull through this.
Good luck, post some pics for us if you can lReef lKeeper 12-18-2006, 11:49 PM it is very imporant to catch this disease (RTN) early. it is contagious to other corals.
Just a tidbit for the new guys !! CarmieJo 12-19-2006, 12:03 AM Victoria, that stinks!:( Sorry Victoria. Do you know if it connected to the red bug treatment? lReef lKeeper 12-19-2006, 07:18 AM BTW .... sorry for the loss !!
RTN in most cases is a stress induced illness. George 12-19-2006, 10:03 AM I have recently had a bout with this in my tank. Anyone know if a UV sterilizer "polishing" will help? lReef lKeeper 12-19-2006, 05:48 PM IMO, a U.V. sterilizer should never be used on a reef tank. it kills off the good bacteria as well as the bad. that is only my opinion on it, some use them with great success, not me though. this is still a pretty heated topic among the hobby though. some swear by them, some (me included) hate them. the reason i hate them is this ... IMO, they are more like a "bandaid" for something being wrong. i just thing you should find the problem and fix it rather than put a "bandaid" on it.
just my $.02 on U.V sterilizers Victoria 12-19-2006, 06:46 PM I would have to agree in not using uv with a reef tank. I like to go el natural Victoria 12-19-2006, 06:50 PM As far as the red bug treatment causing the problem, I have my info out there and I am talking with some of the top guys. As far as my own investagation goes on the few thread that I have read... some people have experienced some of the same problems. More research is need to come to that conclusion. I will share my findings when I have enough. It is interesting!! Victoria 12-20-2006, 12:19 PM Ok here the before and the after.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e284/VICTORIARAW/aftermath005.jpg man... that stinks.. trust me, i know how ya feel..
if theres anything i can do to help, you just let me know.. ;) Victoria 12-20-2006, 04:01 PM Thanks Rob
I think its under control at the moment. Eric borneman say to take that bunch of corals out. I will remove them this evening and go from there. Seahorsedreams 12-20-2006, 07:29 PM I had my SPS tank crash 2 years back... everything gone in a heartbeat. Victoria 12-20-2006, 11:30 PM Thanks for the encourgement Seahorse:unsure: I think??
Well it all began tonight... I'll call it operation typhoon:agree: . The tank needed some redecorating. Now I will have a break from allways putting my hands in the tank to save some poor coral from the warfare of another. It will look better then before. I took out the corals in question and :bash: fragged them apart and put them in my QT tank. So with each day I will move things around, do a little clean up and give some stuff away. There a line at the front door now  Or frag time!! I will take some picture of course so you all can follow along. Wish me luck. Seahorsedreams 12-21-2006, 12:42 AM Erf! I was trying to be supporter and it came out very..... unencouraging. Sorry 'bought that!
This must be very tough! reefski 12-21-2006, 01:40 PM Victoria:
too bad. it is sometimes very difficult to know just what happened while you are gone. i have come back from several trips to find something that was fine before i left is now dead. no explanation. the tank sitter says all was fine for them. they followed my instructions and yet....
i will be able to give you a frag one of these days of the blue tipped acro. it is growing but still not quite big enough to frag. are the birdsnest and pocillipora ok?
was the red bug Tx effective?
Carl Victoria 12-21-2006, 03:07 PM First I want to say :welcome: to Talkingreef... This is home to me.
The tank will survive and I think will be better. Birdnest is fine, and one piece of the porcillipora is untouched. I have fragged the other one. I still have the blue tipped acro, so I do not need that one. When are you coming up this way again? Not much snow YET.:raining: CarmieJo 12-22-2006, 09:28 PM Victoria, I am so sorry to hear about your corals.
Hello Carl :welcome: to TR. |
