Endangered in the deep 'Coral Reef' explores damage, threats to fragile ecology

Funny thing about coral: it can sway with the ocean currents, all neon orange and lacy, masquerade as white pillars of stone or pop from the ocean floor like a huge garden of cabbage.

Unfunny thing about coral: it's not doing well in some parts of the world. And that's a problem, according to a new film at the Arizona Science Center, because coral reefs hold great potential for medical cures and are home to millions of fish that feed a billion people a year.

The giant-screen film Coral Reef Adventure opened this week, along with Beavers, the story of a family of the industrious mammals in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Both shows run through July 31.
