View Full Version : Feeding Corals, Specifically Frogspawn

I have asked this before. I would like to ask again - being more specific this time around. When I bought my Frogspawn, I listened to the store employee go on and on about how direct feeding was not necessary - but definitely helpful. I have a lot of suggestions on what I could use. cyclopeez, fresh hatched baby brine shrimp, chunks of silversides, and the list goes on.

However, every conversation I have with someone I think knows something about this says specifically that food particles will stick to the frogspawn tentacles. This is behavior I have observed in anemones both in the wild and in tanks I have kept previously. It is behavior I *expected* with this animal, although this is the first one I have ever kept.

But it’s just not happening.

I have done everything but the large chunks. Nothing sticks to the tentacles. I drop mysis shrimp on it with all powerheads off. I let it sit for 20 minutes. When I turn the flow back on, the food just flies on out.

As far as I can tell, the frogspawn is healthy and happy. It’s beautiful. It’s been in my tank now for over two months. It’s growing.

I can’t say I am overly concerned at this point, simply because it is looking so good, at least to me. I just find it odd that so many can give me the same advice and I just can’t seem to make this work. I figure if everyone else can do it, and I can’t... I must be doing something wrong.

Another thing about this... I have a smaller tank - 29 gallons. So I am very concerned about overfeeding and polluting this tank.

Advice, additional instuction, assistance appreciated.

Stop spot feeding it.
I dont spot feed mine but I have seen it eat I have also seen mysis land on/in it then drift away when I turned the pumps on. They dont need to eat (in that way) but if they want it they will take it. there will be enough food floating around after feeding for the FS to catch if it needs it.

I dont spot feed mine at all and it is growing very nicely. The only thing i feed my tank for filter feeders is cyclop's Im not sure if they are making a diference but everything esle seems to like it. I wouldnt worry to much about spot feeding it. It will eat when it wants too.

What type of lighting are you using?

Feeder goldfish twice a day will put some meat on that coral.

I'm just kidding. I don't target feed frogspawn.

I have had mine for about 5 months. Occasionally I shoot some cyclo in it's direction, but I don't see it sticking to it or it consuming it. It has almost doubled in size, so I guess it doesn't really need to the direct feeds.
