View Full Version : Upcomming Seahorse show questions As mentioned in Episode 30, in late febuary Dave P is going to be doing a show with me about seahorses. In this show we will be covering the basics about filtration, lighting, water, setup, and co-inhabitants.
if you have any special questions that you would like for Dave to and answer on this show, please post then in this thread.
A few days before that show, we will gather the questions and answer as many as we can on the show.
Please be advised, questions asked here, will be answered on the show, not in this thread, if you need help with something that is more urgent, please post in one of the other discussion forums.
Thanks Reefbaby 01-27-2006, 06:47 AM I would be interested in what other species you could keep with seahorses. Corals or no corals? What size of tank is a reasonable size for them?
And also the eco-environmental issues with seahorses. Are they considered a difficult species to keep and shouldn't be imported or do they breed well in captivity, so it's less of an issue?
I've always been so fascinated with aquatic equines. They're so lovely to watch and so gentle with each other....and I love the fact that the males are the ones to get pregnant!!!! :-)
Christi JustDavidP 01-27-2006, 08:46 AM Great questions Christi! I will be covering this exact information in the upcoming podcast. I will be limiting my discussion to Hippocampus Reidi (The Brazilian Seahorse) but most of what you asked about can be applied to most, if not all seahorses.
Stay tuned, you will be pleasantly surprised! I'm real excited about this future show.
Keep the questions coming folks. There is NO SUCH THING as a "dumb" question on the Talkingreef. The only dumb questions are the ones not asked that results in problems later on. Your question may spare another member from heart aches with their own systems and inhabitants.
Dave byseven 01-27-2006, 10:06 PM Great Ideo for the Show !!!
Thanks again David !!! JustDavidP 01-28-2006, 09:33 AM It's going to be fun!
I just had the experience of talking with one of my son's friend's mother. She saw the display tank in my family room and said "I didn't think seahorses were real"! I love that line. It is my 'open door' to teach them about these cool fish.
I want to answer all of YOUR questions in this show..so my TR peers...what do you want to know about H. Reidi?
Dave byseven 01-28-2006, 09:37 AM I don't know anything about SeaHorses !
I want learn more about those fishes.
When people say SeaHorse Tank, that means ONLY seahorses ? Can you mix then with anyother fishes , coral , inverts ?
Filtration ? tank size ? water param. ......
A lots and lots of question for the show !!!! JustDavidP 01-29-2006, 10:52 AM First and foremost...what would you like me to call ya? BySeven? Never after 7 ;) You can call me Dave but don't call me to tell me my sump is overflowing :D
Great questions... most if not all will be covered in the show. IF WE can't get to all your questions, I can post my "Care sheet" that I give to folks who buy my ponies.
Gotta run.. Ponyboy, my prolific male, just gave birth to more fry this morning. Time to start a siphon and a kreisel system ... the fun never ends.
Dave Oh yes, this will be a fun one. I'd love to learn about propagating them. How your kreisel works, what you feed them and at what stages? How difficult are they to keep? How are they doing in the wild? Reefbaby 01-29-2006, 02:11 PM Dave...for a minute there, I thought you were going to say, "and you can call me Al"!;)
Christi gwen_o_lyn 01-29-2006, 04:55 PM Maybe a 2 part show on seahorses would work. A first show about them and then the second show on taking care of the fry maybe? Sounds like there is plenty of information to do that. ;) Maybe a 2 part show on seahorses would work. A first show about them and then the second show on taking care of the fry maybe? this is a great idea, and was pretty much what i was planning for as time allows.
dave and i want to start with the basics (as i do with all TR things),
but as long as there as interest, and Dave is up to it ;) i do wan tto do a second part on breeding and fry care. JustDavidP 01-30-2006, 08:29 AM If there is a demand, we can do anything to meet the demand. Again, for any information I am lacking, I can always point you to the better resources.
Dave janey 02-04-2006, 11:07 AM OH GREAT!! ..
Always wanted to have Seahorse.. Cool . Can't wait to hear this....
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b267/janey6152/MHTAG.gif JustDavidP 02-06-2006, 01:09 PM Janey... your picture, with the toadstool and pony is nice! That looks like one of my H. Reidi Gurls! Reefbaby 02-06-2006, 04:11 PM I love their eyes! They always look like their sporting major theater eyelashes! :-) JustDavidP 02-07-2006, 08:59 AM So true...and they get even more 'seductive' when they want to be fed! :D They can really put on a dance and show to get your attention.
Dave jeepjon 02-11-2006, 11:04 AM Are seahorses active pets? I am considering using my newly set up tank as a horse corral...but I don't know about what species I can keep in a 15 gallon tall. So anything about what horses in what size tank would be great to do on the show! I would also love to know about horses I can keep in a 15 gallon tall w/o any major feeding issues (no micro sized horses here) or chilling issues. Again, basic tank requirements and feeding requirements would be what I want in the podcast! ghostbear29 02-11-2006, 08:19 PM seahorses and dwarf seahorse setups. that would be cool. I want to get an idea for my mothers 5 gal in her science class. Ive read about it but would like to get some more feedback to how many to keep and what kind. Also, price and availability would be a good area to talk upon. good luck. Reefbaby 02-12-2006, 03:59 AM Hey Dave! Congrats on your Seahorse Tank of the Month over at CR! That's great to be so recognized! Great job! We look forward to hearing more about those ponies over here!
:-) janey 02-12-2006, 05:19 PM can someone post the link to that.. Would love to see it..
thanks heres the link
http://www.captivereefing.com/viewtopic.php?t=2540 Reefbaby 02-13-2006, 02:58 AM here ya go... (http://www.captivereefing.com/) Reefbaby 02-13-2006, 02:59 AM woops....Rob was quicker than me! :-) JustDavidP 02-13-2006, 11:32 AM :D Thanks for the plug Christi! I've been on many forums, for a few years, and when/if I get the TOTM or other accolades, I just let it be. If I pretend to be 'deserving' or even somewhat 'knowing' I can get myself into trouble.
Again, I'm just your ordinary, average hobbyist who learned from others, enjoys passing information on to others, and am constantly tweaking my systems to do something 'different' or 'better' based upon my limited research.
The folks at Captive Reefing did a great job keeping a community (Reef Freaks) together when the original site went down. There is another, great site with former "freaks" too called "Creative Reefing". I am often found there, scrolling through the bits and bytes.
Rob and I will compile these pony related questions for the show. If I don't get to answering ALL of the questions, I'll be sure to do so here.
In the mean time, please do research 'dwarves' if you are interested in them. Many who do, realize that there is a TON of work, needed daily, to keep them going. They are a good choice for small tanks (i.e. 5 gallons), but a 15 tall, at 18 1/4 in height could house a pair of Reidi (with shallow sand bed). I'd NOT put Erectus in there, they get a little larger. I can and will go over some more of this in the show and why I feel that Reidi can fit in smallish tanks.
