OK, so I see in all my ID books that it says I shouldn't have two firefish at the same time unless they are paired. However, it's not really specifically answering my question, which is, can I have a regular firefish and a purple firefish?

My guess is probably not - they are awfully close. But I wanted to ask anyhow, just to find out for sure.

I have had up to 6 firefish at the same time with no problems and IME when they are all the same color they school if they are one purple one yellow they will not, but they do coexist

firefish of the same color do co-exist, but do require their own space. your tank must be of adequete size to house more than one. it is usually better to add them into the tank at the same time.

I am small. 29 Gallons.
The safest route then would be to keep only one.
