Well, after much feedback and commentary around the Phyto Culturing video (http://www.talkingreef.com/forums/showthread.php?t=557), i realized one main thing i left out was how to start the culture. well in this video i highlight how to do this using liquid starter culture. THis process is the same using culture disks, but since the liquid is a bit new and seemed to be more confusing i decided to go this route

Yess Another Vid

Perfect timing Rob. I ordered all my stuff ealier this week. So by next week I will start my first phyto culture. I purchased Nano FAF. I am sorry I didn't support Algagen, but I wanted to get the plankton collector and phyto at the same place to save on shipping. I will however get the isocrysis from them if all goes well.

Not yet, but I am going to attempt it both ways from the getgo. one with the micro algae gro stuff from Florida Aqua farms and one with MG.

I am kinda trying it. Melev updated his site since I'd been there last. I had emailed him with a question on it, because I was thinking that my splitting it once a week was causing an accumulation of Miracle-Gro.

He said he splits every 4-6 weeks. I went two weeks without crashing, I ended up splitting it to replace what I used. Boy, it got nice and dark too.

Now, I am thinking about buying the discs to start Isocrysis. If I do that, I'll probably switch to Micro Algae Grow. Florida Aqua Farms has it in bigger bottles than the 8.5oz.

Rob was that liquid culture directly off Algagen's site or Aquatic Ecosystems linked from Algagen?

yep you said it in the vid. :D it just happens theres a wal-mart about 5 mins from my house, nothing else but theres a wally world. LOL i got the same looks. if i would have bought some cold medicine they probably would think i was making a meth lab, and called the police on me LOL. oh the things we go through for our tanks!!

Here is a picture of my phytoculture started after seeing your cultures. I´m now feeding them to rotifers. Hopefully i will feed the rotifers to the frys(? fries?, fly=flies, I´m Swedish ;) ) of my Amphiprion frenatus that i hope will hatch tonight.

i hope you have a lot more than in that picture.. you will need a few gallons of both (at least) to keep the clown fry alive.. ;)

I have a bit more now (twice as much of both), but since they laid their eggs 8 days ago this is the best i could do. I guess it´s a bit easyer to get hold of rotifers and phyto were your from, the Atlantic sea is between me and Florida aquafarms :). But I will be ready the next time they lay eggs.

lol.. yes, getting prepped can be a race sometimes, and you can continue culturing as you go, best of luck there, and if this one doesn't work, well you should have more in a few weeks.. ;) (my last batch hatched a day premature and i missed it.. :(

lol.. well it "can" be fishes depending on the context in which its used.
when you are talking about 5 clown fish, its 5 fish.
but if you were talking about 5 different species, or different species in the plural, then its fishes.. clear as mud?? lol

its like the difference in s school of fish or a shoal, a school is a collection of tightly packed fish that follow the leader, where a shoal, is a much more loose collection of fish, that will wonder around looking for food and such, but will still look to a leader for overall direction

Ahab, it is one of those English words that doesn't follow the rule. When talking about baby fish "fry" is both singular and plural. :) You just have to love English!
