You mentioned that its usually not advisable to vacume a DSB. I understand that we dont want to disturb the environment in the sand, so how do we maintain the sand and keep it "white"?

Eddy- that is one of the reasons why I like my SSB- I can move my rocks around anytime I want and mess the sand all up... I sift my sand sometimes to take out the chuckier pieces, but with a DSB, you really can't do that. I like to have a clean sandbed with no bigger pieces of sand than sugar sized.

Thanks gwen, so do you just have extra live rock for filtration and a super-powered skimmer? I need to find some pictures of what a DSB and a SSB look like after being set up for a while and also how the tanks seem be affected.

My tank has been running almost 3 years and I call it very successful every since I started using RODI water and upgraded my skimmer- that was about a year and a half ago.

I actually didn't have enough LR until this January- I only use Marshall Island LR and at $9/lb, I was buying it very slowly. Then I found a guy tearing his tank down and hit the jackpot!! Marshall Island for $3/lb loaded with SPS!! wooo hoooo!! So basically I don't think you really need that much LR- I had about 40-50lbs before I added more in a 72g tank.

I contribute my success to that skimmer- it's powerful. I could prolly feed every day if I wanted to, but I'm not gonna try that. I've dumped craploads of food in my tank on accident many times... I never rinse my frozen food- haven't seen cyano or hair algae since the days when I was using tap water and before my EuroReef. Now the rock for my nano did have bubble algae and that was in my big tank before I got the nano setup.... so I gotta fix that....
About to get off work- gotta run for now, but maybe that helps.
