woot!
anyway, great video Rob, but I was just wondering how you go about filling the U tube and starting the siphon? oh, darn, forgot all about this...
actually what i use is an air tube.. slipped in the tip to the top of the "U"
then with both ends in the water, adn the return line going.
then i suck the air out and it starts the siphon .. :) m8298 07-27-2006, 08:57 PM This one isn't available yet on iTunes... Small Fry 07-27-2006, 09:24 PM gonna say, i can't find it yet on any linx or itunes :( sorry about that, i updated the feed, but forgot to upload it..
should be there in about 10-15 minutes Small Fry 07-27-2006, 10:16 PM its odd, i cant download any TR podcasts, it'll d/l for like 1.5 seconds then stop. all othr podcasts work fine :( yeah, there are still some scattered reports of DL issues...
im going to try something else tonight to get it fixed
sorry about all these problems guys, i really feel bad about it fat walrus 07-28-2006, 02:02 AM the video seems to freeze right after the T-shirt. Small Fry 07-28-2006, 02:07 AM the video seems to freeze right after the T-shirt.

were you able to see the whole video? RocketSeason 07-28-2006, 11:31 AM Yeah I got 3/4 of the way done downloading (took nearly 2 hours) and then it stopped. wouldn't play anything.
I am using I tunes to do it. veriann 07-28-2006, 01:11 PM you look after us rob in ever respect possible, but the work load is head splitting for the site> isn't it about time u appointed me a god of the underworld so i could help u with your work load....:p all those in favour say I
lol feel free to kick me in the butt in an usher gesture to move on!!! lol.. its ok V...
yeah, the problem with the speed is its a large video file, about 100 MB or so.
when i last upgraded the server i had to change the way the bandwidth worked.
so instead of being allowed x GB per month, im moved to unlimited GB per month, but only at a throughput of x mb/s.. so its more cost effective, but does mean that initial release days of very large files are going to be slow. i deemed it acceptable, since post people can just let it download in the background, or run it overnight using a podcatcher.. maybe i need in add another line to it.. man..
this is also assuming people are using a client, and not downloading from the site directly... veriann 07-28-2006, 02:25 PM i know ur not asking me these questions> cause u have stat collecting Prodicols collecting data! the only question u need from us is if its enough money to keep the costs of the bandwith & extra components viable! what is your ratio of itunes fetch to other clients grabbers? its hard to say, but its seems to be almost 50:50
there are about 500-550 daily subscribers using a client, btu the show gets downloaded about 1000 times in the first few days
1000ppl x 100mb show.. comes out to about 100 GB transfer just in the first few days. last month i think i moved almost 300 GB of data, but i woudl have to confirm that number.. ;) veriann 07-28-2006, 03:03 PM wow! thats some serious foot trafic to say the least! wwest 07-28-2006, 03:05 PM rob, do you think it would be worth it if you were to offer a series of cd's like maybe 4 episodes at a time for sale? yes, that is somethign i have been thinking about, but have been trying to find a way to stream line the sale of it wwest 07-28-2006, 03:12 PM ok well if you need help i have a rack of 6 cd-r's i could burn them fairly quickly :) veriann 07-28-2006, 03:14 PM hey>>>>>>>>>hey! port of call has to be friends first! i guess your waiting for payment before you send my disk of info! & rightly so, if im a tight ass i should expected to shop at 7/11 well i was looking for a way to setup an order system that woudl accept a few $$ via paypal. but then im trying to figure out how best to deal with shipping and all that.
i have some ideas, but nothing solid yet veriann 07-28-2006, 03:35 PM i make no secret that im not a fan of paypal, personally i think its another money making crock of sh#t! but untill someone comes up with my idea of global credits, which i might add should be implimented asap! we may live in different counties, but why should be we be governerned by global standings on here! its a nertral medium in every respect! without upseting our darker skinned members, if it was in the real world if your from the hot spots u wouldn;t even get the opertunity to voice! especilly to a voice on here! so it proves we have a nutrallity & money exchange should be the same! NaClFinatic 07-28-2006, 06:47 PM I can't download it at all. It doesn't even start. Just some not available message. I don't use Itunes but tried Yahoo, Feedburner, and directly from the site...
Can't wait to see it! :) well, i have confirmed the URL is correct.
tested i 3 times, got that message once.
after looking at the server the network connection has been running at 110% since 10 minutes after i released it, so the server is getting slammed.
im going to look at increasing the bandwidth on this server, but have to get costed out first... check this out
its getting slamed m8298 07-28-2006, 08:01 PM Ain't it great being popular? You're the man...
BTW, I thought that it was pretty cool of you to give a plug to some of the other podcasts. im in EDT, but the server is actually in another state, its on CDT. so that 4Am is 4:00 AM CDT..
yeah, its great, but expensive. i have to upgrade the server again, i just did it back in march...lol
oh, and Matt...
*shaking finger* stop that... ;)
you need to learn to share.... :p Small Fry 07-29-2006, 01:11 AM is it just because it's busy or is something messed up, i can't d/l any TR podcasts at all :( RocketSeason 07-29-2006, 01:33 PM Ok, I have a question,
What model overflow boxes are those? and what flow rating would you recommend on a 37 gallon tank?
Thanks! DJGonzo69 07-29-2006, 04:14 PM Rob,
Still DL the podcast. Was it the Tee I sent you??? if so oh man i gotta see it!!! I have a few more left I have to send you...hahahaha. If you still need help with duping the CD I also have a 7-rack duplicator that I can use to help dupe those CD's. so between me & Wes you have 13 burners at your disposal :-)
-John fat walrus 07-29-2006, 09:29 PM What time zone is that in? I will have to try to download at 4am... :)
i've been trying it a 3am pacific time, and still won't work. Worked for me a few days ago. Got it from itunes. NaClFinatic 07-30-2006, 09:14 AM I finally got it last night. It's great watching the videos, but is lots of size for <20mins. Seeing things is really great for certain things. Maybe for some topics you could put a series of slides in the thread to follow along to while listening? Even animated GIFs could demonstrate some things.
I think it'd be great to get a tank tour from Rob. I love the tank videos and seeing everything actually moving around and doing it's thing. Guess I have to vicariously enjoy others tanks since I don't have one setup yet! :D (Though I did pick up a brand new 90g AGA RR for only $200 yesterday. That's a heck of a deal! I guess the guy at the LFS was able to get his hands on some inventory from a closing store. Now I will be staring at it longingly for months till I get it set up!) is it just because it's busy or is something messed up, i can't d/l any TR podcasts at all :(
again, im sorry, for all the delays, the server has started to calm down, if you haven already, you should be ok to get it now
Ok, I have a question,

Thanks!
they are generic boxes i get from my LFS, i think they are made by a local manufacturer, they move about 900 GPH i think.
for you it really depends on your return pump size and your sump size, but i think you would be fine with something of similar rate. since that is the MAX rate, you can run it at anything less that that rate

its something i could look into, but unfortunately, that is 10 times more work, and most people listen while on the go and dont have a computer in front of them while listening. Small Fry 07-30-2006, 04:47 PM alrightey, i got it :D Nyles 07-31-2006, 10:59 AM Rob,
Can you specify where I can get the air actuated top off switch system?
Thanks,
Nyles here is the one i have

i cant speak to its effectiveness, becuas ei havent set it up yet, but will be soon Nyles 07-31-2006, 11:58 AM Thanks for the fast reply. Daisy 08-01-2006, 12:18 PM Hi,
Really enjoyed the video podcast on overflows as I am a newbie and really didn't understand how they worked in a non reef ready tank.
But, I would like to know which overflow that is on the video. I don't know which ones are good and since you were so sure that the siphon wouldn't be broken in case of a power failure I was wanting that one if I got one. I can only find one called a CPR and it seems there are complaints about this brand.
Also, if I add a sump/refugium can I put a HOB Remora skimmer on it and get it out of my main tank?
Thanks,
Daisy the overflow, is just a generic overflow, check with your LFS as they should have or should be able to order them.
just pay attention to the flow rate, and make sure it has the baffle in place to maintain the siphon in case of pump outage
and last but not least..
:welcome: to talkingreef, we all glad you have joined us.. :) m8298 08-01-2006, 03:15 PM Welcome aboard Daisy!!! Daisy 08-01-2006, 05:37 PM Hi, I would like to know about the actual overflow box in the video, I have been informed that it is just a generic overflow. I can't find a generic one online. Is that DIY or something made by someone that I could buy?
I have no idea what would be a good one and thought apparently that one would be. Are CPR brand ones good?
Also, if I have a sump/refugium setup underneath my 46 gal bowfront could I use my HOB Remora Skimmer in it instead of on the back of my tank? I would really like to go to that type of setup if I can find a good overflow box that I can trust not to break the siphon even if the power goes out.
Thanks for the welcome. I have been listening to the Podcast for quite a while just never posted yet. I hope to make some new friends and have a wonderful tank. Right now it is full of HA and today I started with Marine SAT. Wish me luck.
Dsy yes, many people have good luck with the CPR overflow, i have never used it personally so i cant vouch for it
this one by lifereef is very similar to the one i have
http://www.lifereef.com/siphon.html
in my search i also found that there are quite a few on ebay you can check out also
and regarding the skimmer, as long as its rated to handle the amount of water you have you can certainly place it on your sump/fuge Yes you can put your Remora in the sump that's how I have mine right now. You just need to add about 6 inches of hose so that pump sits in the water.
I have an overflow much like Rob's. I have never experienced a time that it has lost syphon. Not to say it won't happen. It helps if you use a pump with enough flow to push all the bubbles through the U tube. Also making sure the overflow box is level. Ebay has pretty good deals on overflows. My LFS wants $70-140 for them. I have seen some that use an aqua lifter pump to keep the syphon going. I stayed away from those, because it was one more thing that needed to be plugged in. Good luck getting the HA cleared up. fat walrus 08-02-2006, 02:08 AM yes, many people have good luck with the CPR overflow, i have never used it personally so i cant vouch for it
i can. i have use numerous overflow units in my hobby experience, and CPR is the only one that has never let me down. the entire unit is designed as a one piece continuous overflow and surface skimmer unit. if installed properly, it is virtually foolproof. Daisy 08-02-2006, 02:30 AM Great, thanks for the help everyone.
I'll let you know on the HA.
Dsy m8298 08-02-2006, 05:39 PM Hey Walrus, What did you hook the air fitting to? An aqualifter, a powerhead, or something else? That's really the only reason I didn't get one, I didn't know what hook it to. I even thought about adding an extra port on my beckett head for my skimmer. m8298 08-02-2006, 05:41 PM And how much of a pain is it to clean??? fat walrus 08-03-2006, 03:39 AM Hey Walrus, What did you hook the air fitting to? you don't have to hook it up to anything. the option is just there......if you wish to hook it up, aqualifter, powerhead, or even return pump will do. just not to the a beckett head or any other air injection to a protein skimmer. RocketSeason 08-06-2006, 12:03 PM So if I were to go with an overflow box that can handle 700 gph, what would be a good pump to match that too?
I have about 4 feet of headloss and I want to add a SCWD. I don't know what that does for headloss... So if I were to go with an overflow box that can handle 700 gph, what would be a good pump to match that too?

any pump that is less than 700 GPH at a 4' head.. ;) RocketSeason 08-07-2006, 07:25 AM Thanks Rob.
Hehe.
Anyways. I'll figure this all out and post in my tank thread. Thanks for the help! yeah, sorry to be so vague..
its really up to you. im not sure that the head loss is on a Mag 9, but you could probably get a mag 7 or a mag 5. i would stay away from RIO personally. Nyles 11-04-2006, 06:15 PM here is the one i have
