View Full Version : My babies

Rob

well, after months of working on getting a viable clutch of eggs from my clowns, and raising the eggs from friends eggs...

i finally have my own clown babies, from my own clown..

survival rate has been GREAT.
about 10 eggs didnt hatch, and about 5 babies have died in the last 3-4 days (which is a great survival rate)

so i thought i would share some pics of my new babies (cant count yet, but my guess is about 100-150 larvae)

i did the best i could, but there small (even though they are twice the size from when they hatched.. ;) )

Rob
07-13-2006, 12:03 AM
well will likely sell/give them away as with the others...

just excited because all the others i have raised were from another persons fish.. its taken me a while to get these guys spawning..

i will keep this thread updated as things progress..

whoa, sweet!!! rob how did you remove the eggs from the rocks? my clowns layed eggs in my 2 gallon nano, how long does it take for them to hatch?

Rob
07-13-2006, 12:15 AM
well, i reall want to find an economical way to promote getting tank raised fish to poeple..

so i my main goal now i to supply them to LFS...

but im goign to start expanding to new species soon..
BTW, these are Amphiprion percula

Rob
07-13-2006, 12:29 AM
they lay the eggs on a ceramic tile i have in there, then i transport that to the hatching tank

you actually "cant" remove the eggs from what they were laid on, or they will not hatch

hatch time depend son the species, but mine take 9 days

pham411
07-13-2006, 12:46 AM
how did you get them to lay on the tile??

Rob
07-13-2006, 12:50 AM
if placed in the right positions, they will almost always choose the tile over a rock since the surface is better than rocks...
for me, i just placed two tiles in the two likely places they would spawn, and crossed my fingers

i will see if i can get a pic tmw of it

pham411
07-13-2006, 01:10 AM
nice, what type of tile did you use

Rob
07-13-2006, 01:11 AM
just a regular 4" ceramic floor tile, with the rough side up

Awesome, what type of filtration are you using in their hatchery aquarium? Also what are you feeding the tiny fellows. Any plans to distributing them to willing adopting Talking Reef folks?

Awesome, what type of filtration are you using in their hatchery aquarium?
just lots of water changes...
once the metamorphosis phase is complete they will go to another thank that will be filtered with a sponge filter.. but for now, its just water changes every other day

Also what are you feeding the tiny fellows.
right now they are feeding exclusively on rotifers, soon, they will move to bbs..
then after the metamorphosis, i will start moving them to flake foods

Any plans to distributing them to willing adopting Talking Reef folks?

yep.. id be willing to do that... have to work out the details, but its an options.. :)

Rob,

How long does it take for the eggs to hatch? My clowns just laid eggs, this is the first time since I got them. They have been laying eggs together for awhile before I got them.

See http://www.talkingreef.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1536 for a video.

Rob
07-21-2006, 11:04 PM
working on getting the video files now..
depends on the species, but its usually between 8-10 days.

its awesome that they are spawning, took me about 8 months to get my 2 spawning.. lol

07-22-2006, 12:16 AM
I bought a 150 from a michigan reefer member and the night before I picked it up they has spawned. When they got the eggs back they cleared the rock. That was 2 weeks ago. This afternoon they started to clean the rock, I figured any day now. Then my wife said hey why is this fish swimming upside down?

They are Clarki Clowns or they maybe Blue Stripes but it maybe be my light giving off the blue. Im going to add a tile so I can remove them next time.

I added a QT mov file to my post try it.

just to update everyone..

i have good news and bad news...
bad news:
there were more deaths than i was hoping for. i believe this was due to lack of nutrition as i had a problem with my phytocultures leading to improper rotifer health, leading to the rotifers not being a good enough food source.. tried to supplement with some golden pearls, but it was to late for most by the time i realized.

Good News:
i have 17 of them alive and doing well, i am now free and clear of the metamorphoses phase, and all 17 are starting to show there first stripe. there are still very small, will try to get some new pics if i can..

m8298
07-31-2006, 06:05 PM
Hey Rob, sorry to hear of your losses. It must be a pretty good feeling to have the 17 that made it though. I'm looking forward to the pics.

Is phyto not the best food for rotifers?

Rob
07-31-2006, 06:21 PM
no, phyto is great food, but i ran into some problems with my cultures..
left the caps off my water containers which caused the SG in my culture medium to get too high this caused very poor production of phyto, which meant little food for the rotifers. with this lack of food, the rotifer density dropped and what was in there was not well feed, meaning it was not very nutritious for the fish.

m8298
07-31-2006, 06:26 PM
How did you figure that out (to be the cause?)

Rob
07-31-2006, 06:56 PM
well i knew something wasn't right after noticing my cultures weren't getting darker..
so i went through filtering and splitting as normal but still nothing, then i split and used new containers and everything. still same problem.
this time when doing my split i thought about the culture medium and testing the SG of what i had left, and it was about 1.024-1.025, so lowered it to 1.019 and setup one test culture with what was left.. within 2 days it was back to a nice dark color...
and has been fine since

Hey Rob... this project should be something you continue to be happy about. Like a phoenix from the ashes...

Question: since you are still experiencing massive die off wouldn't it make sense to extract every and any living thing into a quarrantine tank for now?

Rob

Wow Rob!!! That's great! I hope they weren't affected by your disaster?.....

nope, not at all, they babies and the parents are each in there own totally separate tanks.

well this is a tricky one.. first of, most of the damage was done when i got home, so the best thing for me to do was to stabilize the system. taking the corals out and putting them into a QT would have only increased the amount of stress and likely resulted in further damage. so i decided to clean up the water in the system as quickly as possible. the trick is you have to make a call.. which one is more stressful, leaving them in there, or acclimating them to a totally new system, i chose to leave them, since i was able to clean up most everything
