View Full Version : Iodine treatment wwest 06-27-2006, 10:16 PM i have recently learned that alot of people treat there display tanks and frags tanks with Iodine. I have heard that you have to be careful and not over dose. so i decided to get a tester. right now i am testing once a week ( or so lol ) i was going to test the iodine twice a week untill i get the hang off. my question is, does anyone use Iodine successfully and have advice ? or have anyone ever heard of some tragedies due to iodine? i have had a few issues with iodine, such as burning Xenia and such, but if you dose slowly and carefully its does have positive effects.
just make sure you dont overdose, as you have noted. fat walrus 06-27-2006, 10:25 PM stay away from the more concentrated formulas, you'll be playing with fire (no pun intended). pham411 06-27-2006, 10:32 PM i use lugos iodine. its quite concentrated so i dose under the recomended amount. i dont test for iodine so i only dose once a week or every other week. wwest 06-27-2006, 11:11 PM the iodine i was going to purchase i beleave is kent. would that be a good treatment? and im also having trouble finding the currect level for iodine to be. the test kit says i beleive 0.08 or something but i want to match it with a diferent company or person. anyone know of the direction to point me? wildeone 06-27-2006, 11:52 PM I use half the recommended dosage on my Kent Iodine. This guy I know from Michigan said in one of those podcast things that he uses half what they recommend since he doesn't test for it. I just can't remember his name...... :)
BTW I put it in my ATO reservoir that way it goes in over time. ghostbear29 06-28-2006, 02:28 AM I find that in smaller tanks such as mine...the big bottles of kents or seachem usually work best. the super concentrate small bottles or anything that says "pro" usually means "disaster". oh yeah, I also dose methyline blue. 5 drops per 20 gallons. A marine bio thangy we did in school. fat walrus 06-28-2006, 02:35 AM I find that in smaller tanks such as mine...the big bottles of kents or seachem usually work best. the super concentrate small bottles or anything that says "pro" usually means "disaster". oh yeah, I also dose methyline blue. 5 drops per 20 gallons. why the methylene blue? veriann 06-28-2006, 07:34 AM wooooal, kill the motor dude
my question is>> do u actualy use this stuff for prolong periods? in my travels i have heard nothing but contridictions about this chemical!
yes its safe with messured doses usually under 50ppm, yes it aids in reversal of nitrite (NO2-) or cyanide (CN-) poisoning of marine and freshwater aquarium fishes>>just as long as the dip is under 10sec, cause its halves their life in most study cases.(just to pin point on how this last point works , it converts methemoglobin into hemoglobin in the fish's blood) yes its been shown useful in some & i hightlight some, fungal infections & parasitic protozoans.although other products are more designed to target the condition dirrectly.
but theres a flip side, & i love this, when used in the display its blue compond when it hit the water will taint everything with prolonged exposure,so ur silicon, ur rock ,everthing will take on the colour! it kills all plant life, it kills off your bacterial populations, & with prolonged exposure kills your fish! As for the effects on our coral animals its yet to be shown, or i haven't come across it! m8298 06-28-2006, 09:49 AM I use Lugol's solution too, I use the recomended dose amount, but I only do it like every other month. Seems to me like there is a correlation between having used too much, and an increase in cyanobacteria. That's just what I noticed, may not be scientific fact. Lugol's is a mixture of Iodine and Iodide, I'm not sure the advantages/disadvantages of each. I also noticed that my Xenia seem to pulse a little more with the addition of Iodine. I have also used it as a dip one time when I had some zoo-eating Nudibranch. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=451720&highlight=mucho+dip It worked for that. Veriann, here we are talking about iodine as a trace element and not a dip/treatment (at least that's what the original question was about) Iodine is important to many invertebrates. corals, crabs shrimp etc. infact, proper iodine levels are important to for shrimp and crabs to molt properly
for corals its been said, however, not totally conclusive, that iodine assists in stony coral pigmentation and calcification.
the catch i have found is that people, or more likely companies are marketing this as a major supplement, where in fact it should be treated as a trace element.
in smaller tanks, or tanks where water changes are done very regularly, iodine probably doesnt need to be dosed at all since it will be replenished with your salt mix m8298 06-28-2006, 01:09 PM Was Veriann talking about Iodine or the Methylene Blue? I thought he was referring to the Methylene Blue? wwest 06-28-2006, 01:31 PM i beleave he was referring to methylene blue. i beleave he was referring to methylene blue.
not sure where methylene blue came up, the thread topic was on dosing iodine wwest 06-28-2006, 02:11 PM yea, lol thanks everyone for your input i am going to start doseing and messuring this weekend ill fill you guys in on how it goes.. hopefully well :) cool, yes keep us informed as to how it goes for you fat walrus 06-28-2006, 04:32 PM not sure where methylene blue came up, the thread topic was on dosing iodine
ghostbear29 mentions that he doses methyelene blue along with iodine in reply#7. veriann 06-28-2006, 05:44 PM opps, yeah forgot to put the meth blue heading in there, if u weren't all mind readers u would have thought i was crazy & talking about iodine! sorry about that!
it was in relation to ghost input> i just had a question about it! ok, sorry for the confusion.. ;) veriann 06-29-2006, 02:43 AM confusion>> if u look in the dictonary, u will see me under this word as well!
why dont they bundle all the words that describe me & bring out a big glossy paged book! we can even bring out a youngling friendly version...lol confusion>> if u look in the dictonary, u will see me under this word as well!
