can someone give me the name of this? i was told it was just soft coral but i would like to know more about it..

after a second look, it is possible that you have a soft coral commonly called cabbage leather, lettuce coral, or leather carnation.

Yup looks like a cabbage coral(Sinularia dura), it is hard to tell from the picture though.
