View Full Version : Eggcrate?

I apologize for the stupid question, but I'm not sure what an eggcrate is. None of my reef books show what it actually is. (There are only illustrated in the sump diagrams.) Google Image search shows it to be the wavy foam stuff that people sleep on. Is this correct? If so, does it need to be replaced occasionally?

Thanks. This has been bugging me for a while.

the foam eggcrate you found is NOT it :) I thought the very same thing when I first heard the term I think my response was "HUR?!?! " then I remembered back to my carpentry days and that it also meant "interconnected grid-like slats" in this case plastic.

It is also and more properly named light diffuser. Home Depot sells it in sheets in the lighting isle for $10.

available in white, black, silver, and gold. do not get the metallic colored ones, the metallic paint chips off. it is called eggcrate because early american chicken farmers used a similar grid inside wooden crates to hold eggs from rolling around enroute to the marketplace.

Thats funny, I was just at the Home Depot and it is labeled that way also. I though it was just a term that people came up with
