I went to get my nirate tested because my tank is not acting normal. Apparently the tester I had was old. My true nitrate reading was at 40 wow! It explains a lot. So I baught a new polyfilter and de-nitrater pellets. Has any one used the vodka method? I need to get this under control I leave on the 5th for a few days.
please post thoughts an experiences if any?

I know someone who tried the vodka and was having good luck with it. Then out of the blue, he had some crazy bacterial issue happen and lost half of the corals in his 180. Myself...I would try to cut back on feeding, up the water changes for a month or 2 and give it some time and see what happens. I assume your tank has been at 40 for a while. Things havent died but are unhappy right? If this is the case I would do a larger than normal water change before you go and tackle the problem when you return.

I dose kalk and I always dissolve it in vinegar which is a carbon source. My nitrates are undetectable but my bio-load is very low too.
