I'll look again but I think I saw your Octo avalible the other day. What was the name?
I have water in the 39 trying to find lights, I may do a Frogfish in it.
Get this I bought the tank(150) and told her about it on the way home. I got a huge deal and couldn't turn it down. She said cool see ya when you get home. I changed my mind you cant have her anymore.
IS the 240 ready yet?
Thanks everyone for the good words.... m8298 07-14-2006, 12:19 PM It was an Octopus Bimaculoides...
Never had a Frog fish before, I did have a Toad fish. Pretty cool, except he hid most of the time. I ended up giving him to my sisters boyfriend, he had that thing for a few years. What kind of lights are you gonna use?
Yeah, probably a good idea to hang on to her...
Nope, I haven't had time to touch the 240 yet. I cleaned it out a little, but that's it so far. bob21115 07-14-2006, 02:50 PM www.MarineDepotlive.com had Octopus Bimaculoides yesterday sold out today.

frog fish are definately characters of their own. its very hard to find ones that eat frozen foods. i once had a baby yellow frog fish about the size of a penny. in one year he changed color to bright orange and was a little bigger than a golf ball.
nice fish, just make sure the fish in the tank are way larger than itself because i fed my angler fish the same size as them and they totally swallow em up. m8298 07-14-2006, 06:51 PM Shawn was it an Octopus Bimaculoides or Octopus Bimaculatus?
Is this Orange Frog fish the same as a Toad fish? My Toad fish was orange, and went from about 2.5" to about 5" in a little over a year. I fed him mainly frozen Krill. I offer him one at a time on the end of a turkey baster. bob21115 07-14-2006, 07:41 PM Shawn was it an Octopus Bimaculoides or Octopus Bimaculatus?

The one I saw was orange and a little smaller than a baseball. The LFS said the had it for a month and its eating, she didn't know what, "but it must be eating because its been here so long". Yeah right.... I was going to put it in a 39 that I got from John with some LR and thats all. my friend came over to try out his new camera. thanks to him, i now have some pictures. this is one of my fish rooms. i call it the cherry room because all the cabinetry is made of cherry wood. it looks a fish store because i need to maximize floor space. the wall units have sliding doors that i only use when i have company. this room has been in the works since august 2005. CarmieJo 07-17-2006, 10:25 PM Walrus,
I can only say one thing, BEAUTIFUL! Amphibious 07-17-2006, 10:28 PM Well, I can understand now why you can't afford your own camera. :rotfl:

its beautiful, whats the largest single tank in the system
are they all plumbed together, all three rooms? fat walrus 07-18-2006, 12:46 AM its beautiful, whats the largest single tank in the system
are they all plumbed together, all three rooms?
in the cherry room, the largest tank is the free-standing one in front of the window. it is custom to match the horizontal lines of the wall units. that tank is appox 210 gallons. there is that little one at the doorway. that one is a custom cube once again to match lines....it is about 35 gallons. on the wall units, the big one on top in the big wall unit is on the same system of as the 2 top tanks on the smaller wall unit..... the sump is about 100 gallons and have a 7 foot tall ammonia tower. the middle tank on the big wall unit is tied into the cubicles underneath....the cubes serve as additional fuge and resting areas for new additions....there is a sump or aprrox 80 gals. the bottom tank on the small wall unit serves primarily as a quarantine/hospital. all the tanks have UVs. all the tanks were designed and custom built at the same time.....i'm still not quite finished yet. DJGonzo69 07-18-2006, 04:07 AM PG & E must love yah Blub!!!
Go ENRON!!!...LOL Amphibious 07-18-2006, 06:16 AM Yeah, I think Wally here is going to put Enron back in the black. :rotfl:
That's simply AWESOME, Mr. Blubber. fat walrus 07-18-2006, 06:23 AM actually ENRON's problems started when i moved the last time. lol Amphibious 07-18-2006, 06:38 AM Yee gads, I hope you're settled for awhile. I'd hate to move those fish room plus, all the stuff the wife has. I know about that wife stuff. We moved ourself to FL. I bought a 6 x 12' covered trailor. Sold off much of the junk in WI and still made 15 round trips to FL. I sware 14 of those trips were for her "treasures" as she puts it. The distance from our home in WI to our home in FL was 1435 miles. I love to drive but, it got ugly after awhile. JR Aquatics 07-18-2006, 08:48 AM Hey blubber I was wondering if the water and electric company invite you to there Christmas party?LOL NaClFinatic 07-18-2006, 10:32 AM All hail KING Blubber!

my lfs has a guy that does custom work. the wall units had to built inside the room. i had to get a special permit because of the lacquer clearcoats, and the polyester overcoat. it took bribes and special ventilation and dust extraction equipment. bob21115 07-18-2006, 06:58 PM This is my new 39 Gallon I got from m8298 aka John. Im Thinking of putting a Frogfish, puffers or eels. It still needs lights and a skimmer.
This stand and hood were custom built by John. He also built the sump.

It's Brazilian Cherry and Birch plywood. m8298 07-18-2006, 07:26 PM Now, if I could only get the cash, energy, and time to do something with the 240 gallon. huh?
yea i really like it alot. im getting ready to buy a 90 gallon drilled tank and i was thinking about building something like that for it. i like the diamonds alot. you did a heck of a job on the carpentery.. m8298 07-18-2006, 07:38 PM Thanks wwest.
The diamonds were unplanned. I accidently sanded through the veneer on the plywood, after the whole thing was jointed and glued up. The Brazilian Cherry was leftover hardwood floor scraps a friend gave me. fat walrus 07-18-2006, 07:44 PM Now, if I could only get the cash, energy, and time to do something with the 240 gallon. how about just gluing black plexi sheets on each side?
nice cabinet work on that 39. CarmieJo 07-18-2006, 07:49 PM John, very nice.
Walrus, what is an ammonia tower? m8298 07-18-2006, 07:52 PM I might do black sides, as I intend on building the tank into a wall when I finish my basement.
Yeah, I was gonna ask what the ammonia tower was also??? m8298 07-18-2006, 07:55 PM I've got a whole lotta ideas for that 240 Walrus. It also has 4- 3/4"npt holes in the back that will probably end up as a closed loop.
But that'll probably be another thread. fat walrus 07-18-2006, 08:16 PM Walrus, what is an ammonia tower?
it's like a wet/dry, but the bio-balls are out of the sump and in a tall tower. water in pumped into the top at a very fast rate. air is injected upward from the bottom of the tower. as the water smashes through the balls, it is broken up into small droplets. the idea is to try to break the nitrogen bond with the hydrogen and exchange it with oxygen. the tower relies on atmospheric gas exchange instead of conversion by bacteria. this type of process is used in commercial fish farming and water reclaimation. the inventor of the aquarium wet/dry filter, George Schmit worked as engineer for a municipal sewerage department. he combined that idea with CYCLE by HAGEN (the first viable bacteria in a bottle created for the Montreal water department), and the tricke filter was born. my tower is fed by a 4700 gph dolpin pump and is air injected with an electrical turbine. CarmieJo 07-18-2006, 09:02 PM Oh, now I know. I worked in the lab at our wastewater treatment plant and we called them denitrification units. bob21115 07-18-2006, 09:18 PM Looks pretty cool but i dont think a bottle is a skimmer lol :) j/k
do you have pictures of the skimmer too?
It needs lights and a skimmer. John gave me a skimmer with it but I put it on my new 150. bob21115 07-18-2006, 09:19 PM I only have one photo of it, but it looks like you took a photo. It turned out ok, considering I already had the wood laying around. It's Brazilian Cherry and Birch plywood.
Sorry John I couldnt find the camera when I asked. wildeone 07-18-2006, 10:49 PM Holy hell Fat Walrus! Send me your address so I can send your wife a card. If she puts up with all of that she rocks! How many hours a week to maintain that. By my calclluations those tanks average 3 times the size of mine and you have like 18 to 24 of them.
I spend 7 to 14 hours a week on what my wife terms as "fish stuff". So lets say I am 30% efficient, because I am still green at this stuff. You have about 92 times the tank I do, so it would take me like 650 to 1300 hours a week to do my "fish stuff".
All bow to the one true fish king.......
Not only did he get the fish....he kept the wife! DJGonzo69 07-22-2006, 08:56 PM Here is the latest shot of our 40gal tank.

nah it was just how the pic was taken. I think my autofocus took the pic as though the light was all in the middle. Light does get all over the tank. It was just a weird shot. i figured so, but had to make sure.. ;) CarmieJo 07-23-2006, 06:30 PM I like it. I think it made a dramatic shot. RocketSeason 07-26-2006, 10:02 AM Hi everyone! RocketSeason 07-26-2006, 01:58 PM Thanks for the welcome! I have been wanting to join a smaller reef community for a while now. I belong to a very popular Reef community currently that is just so darn big, its hard to follow threads, get questions answered properly by knowledgeable people, and its even hard to form friendships in a community of that size.
I have been into fish for probibly 16 years or so. Reef Keeping for 2 years. My tank is currently recovering from a near fatal disaster that is totally my fault.

We are glad to have you aboard.
:welcome: fat walrus 07-26-2006, 11:55 PM welcome to TR RocketSeason.
nice coral banded shrimp and purple firefish. RocketSeason 07-27-2006, 09:43 AM Thanks fat walrus (heh). To be honest. Neither of them are there anymore.
Well, I figure I need to be honest with you all. I just about killed my tank off completely.
Yep. A bout with cyano/hair algea, nearly all of my coral algea the dying off, the loss of some of my softies, the loss of two fish and nearly all of my clean-up crew left me depressed. And the way I deal with my problems is just to ignore them which, of course, makes things much worse.
So here is where I stand now:
http://static.flickr.com/76/199223720_fd973d91a9.jpg
40 Lbs of live rock, 2 clowns, some clean-up crew, and 20 or so mushrooms. (Nothing can kill a mushroom!)
I recently moved, so it gave me an opportunity to remove all of my rocks and equipment and clean the bad stuff off of them. My skimmer never worked at all and so I replaced it with a Coralife Super Skimmer 65. I removed all filtration media from my canister so now it works as a big closed loop system.
My plan right now is to replace the canister by building a DIY sump/fuge out of a 15 gallon tank and add an overflow box to the back. I am thinking about a QuiteOne 4000 return pump connected to a SCWD. I will then be adding about another 30 lbs of Live rock to the fuge and display, then I can start re-populating the tank.
So wish me luck! I will be needing all of your help to turn this back into a thriving reef again! fat walrus 07-27-2006, 04:33 PM good luck, RocketSeason. CarmieJo 07-27-2006, 09:20 PM Good luck Matt. Danamck 08-10-2006, 02:48 AM Here's a photo of my 240. I hope I'm doing this correctly. I'm kinda new to forums, and this is the first photo I have ever posted to one. If this works, I've got some additional photos - close ups of the livestock and the plumbing.
The tank has been set up for a little over 1 year, but has been a reef for 2 months. This is my first reef tank after many years (decades) of keeping fish. Amphibious 08-10-2006, 07:59 AM Hey Danamck, that 240 looks great. Bring on the pics. JR Aquatics 08-10-2006, 08:35 AM Nice looking tank I like the stand and canopy. Yes, bring on the photos. Welcome to the the wonderful and expensive world of reefkeeping. Danamck 08-10-2006, 09:58 AM Thank you for the compliments - I will post more pictures tonight.
Can someone tell me why my picture showed up as a thumbnail rather than the full picture in the post. Also, what resolution would you suggest for the photos? I have lots of high res photos that I can convert in photoshop, as well as some photos I took at 680 x 480 for posting. Thanks. JeffDubya 08-10-2006, 07:23 PM Better than some, not nearly as nice as others... but works for me! NaClFinatic 08-10-2006, 08:26 PM Nice looking tank Jeff. How big is it? Do you like your royal gramma? I think I want one but I don't see too many. Or at least they are not mentioned as often. CarmieJo 08-10-2006, 09:00 PM Very pretty Danamck. CarmieJo 08-10-2006, 09:50 PM Nice tank Jeff. JeffDubya 08-10-2006, 09:53 PM Nice looking tank Jeff. How big is it? Do you like your royal gramma? I think I want one but I don't see too many. It is a 29 gallon. Hopefully soon I will be adding at least 20 gallons of sump/fuge as well.
I have pretty much always had a royal gramma. They are a very easy fish to keep, they are not aggressive towards other fish (except other royal grammas or similarly colored fish) and they are beautiful. Love the hovering action, they can whip across the tank and stop on a dime with zero drift. Amazing.
Right now I have 2 percs, 1 royal gramma and one 6 line wrasse for fish. I am trying to decide what to get next, think I want one more fish. If I could find a mandarin or scooter that was eating fish food instead of pods, I would do that I think.
Wish I could keep a flame angel or a very small blue tang, but since they nip at polyps and such, I will have to pass until my polyps start taking over :( CarmieJo 08-10-2006, 09:57 PM Thank you for the compliments - I will post more pictures tonight.

I don't know the answer as to why it showed up as a thumbnail. I'm kind of lazy so I just usually upload my hi-res images to Photobucket and then post from there. :) JayBeDriften 08-10-2006, 10:40 PM Here is my 29 Gallon Nano Reef Aquarium.

I purchased about 150 lbs of Tonga live rock that I cured myself ... nasty! The rock was fresh off the plane, and my LFS was nice enough to let me go through the entire shipment and get first dibs on all the good pieces. I was amazed at how much was still alive in those boxes!
Because the rock was going into a tank full of livestock, I let it cure a full 4 weeks. Then out came the coral skeletons and crushed coral, replaced with 300 lbs of live sand and the rock. I left the fish in the tank the whole time, and they all did just fine.
2 weeks after adding the live rock, I removed half of the bio-balls from the wet/dry. 2 week later, out came the rest. I never got any spike what-so-ever. The fish loved the live rock. And the refugium finally starting kicking in. My plan was to wait a few months, then add about 75 lbs. more live rock. I also wanted to improve my water circulation (closed loop), add more lights, and clean up my plumbing. Rev 3 was in the works ... Small Fry 08-11-2006, 11:02 AM wow danamck looks awesome
whoops i was on the last page when i commented, i nevr even saw these pix. Its pretty safe to sya though danamck, that is probably the dream tank of half the people here, if not livestock, then equipment. Shame about the moorish idol though, those fish are gourgeous :(
i love your emporor (??) angel, right in the transition phase, looks really really neat :D
and way to downsize the 120, well i think it's a big tank anyways (:'( i want a 240 :'( ) Danamck 08-11-2006, 11:09 AM Thanks Josh -
I just PM'd Rob to inquire whether my posts would be better suited for the "Member Tank Projects" area, and if he could move them. In hindsite, I think my posts belong there. Small Fry 08-11-2006, 11:16 AM well this is a show us your tank thread, so they belong here, but i for one would love to see you start up your own member tank thread :D Danamck 08-11-2006, 12:09 PM Rob emailed me back and said he thinks the posts should be moved, and that he would take care of it. I need to look into starting my own member thread - maybe that's what Rob is doing?
Thanks again for the praise. Trust me, the 240 didn't happen overnight. I started with 10 and 20 gallon tanks, moved up to 55 when I went to salt, then got a 100, then a 120, and now the 240.
I also have a 75 that has become the home to my pair of Goldens, though I know they will soon outgrow this tank and I will have to make a big decision. To see what the Goldens would do if I were to add them to the 240 (which is now a reef), I took a small rock that had lots of life on it - a mushroom, some Xenia, Zoanthids, etc. As I feared, they ate them all. Shame.
Yes - I love Emperor Angels. He was the second one I had that transitioned from juvinile to adult form. The last one I had for 8 years. My fave angel was my Queen (also my second one). The French Angel was the king of the tank, obviously. While they are not as pretty as adults as they are in their juvenile stage, he had been with me longer than any other fish (over 10 years). He actually was the ONLY fish to survive a total tank wipe out of my 120. He was the hardest of the three Angels to trade in when I went reef. CarmieJo 08-11-2006, 06:57 PM Dana,
Beautiful tank! Amphibious 08-12-2006, 12:39 AM Gotta agree with that. Danamck 08-17-2006, 11:00 AM Thanks everyone. FYI - I have re-posted this thread about my tank, with additional photos and information, in the member's tanks section.
Dana swiseman 08-18-2006, 11:25 AM This is a shot taken a month or so ago. My tank changes daily. It is twice as bright now that I have added some snails that cleaned the back and exposed a layer of coraline on the back. Reefbaby 08-18-2006, 12:10 PM Welcome Danamck and Swiseman! Hope you enjoy our friendly community here. Both of you have got lovely tanks! speaking of lovely tanks, we havent seen any updated shots of your tank RB, i hope thats on your to-do list.. ;) Reefbaby 08-18-2006, 05:43 PM he he he...well, seeing as how not much has happened with it over the past couple of months, there's not too much updating to do.
HOWEVER, my husband's driving down to Germany in a couple weeks and we've already ordered salt, sand, and RODI unit to be picked up. I'm still having a "HOAT" (figure that one out!) deciding whether to go with a Calcium Reactor, Kalkwasser Reactor or to do the Balling Method (as most seem to be doing in Germany). Either way, I need to make up my mind in the next week or so! Uigh!! Hopefully he'll also be picking up some plumbing accessories so we can get going!
Update to follow....in the member tank forum! :) Sheol 03-01-2008, 08:25 PM this is one of my fish rooms.
For the record, the pictures of your fish room made my jaw drop. I would love to have something like that... keeping any combination of fishes your heart desires... but can't imagine ever having enough time for all that maintenance. lReef lKeeper 03-02-2008, 04:10 AM well, since this thread was resurrected from the bottom of the pile ... i will add my tank pic to it ...

Bobby2 03-05-2008, 10:02 PM question I can post my own tank here but can I post some of the aquariums I am responsible for? Reefbaby 03-05-2008, 10:23 PM question I can post my own tank here but can I post some of the aquariums I am responsible for?
sure...why not? As long as you're not infringing on any copywriting laws! :p Bobby2 03-05-2008, 11:32 PM I have asked quite a few clients if I could show off their tank and I have never had anyone say no. I have had a few tell me they could have never had done as well as I have and it is my tank they only feed it and add stuff from time to time.
I don’t have any recent photos it might take me a couple weeks to get some together. Bobby2 03-05-2008, 11:41 PM to add a little hype this is one of them September fifth 07

Your corals and their color look fantastic! Did you move from another tank? Or were you just super ambitious and got so many corals right away? I really like your sump/fuge as well. Looks like you're making the most of your space. Way to go! Danamck 03-14-2008, 08:18 PM I must agree with Christi - WELL DONE! How big is the tank? Bobby2 03-18-2008, 09:28 PM sweet reef...........
looking great
unfortunately I have not had time to get pics of any of the other tanks I have set up yet. Reefbaby 03-18-2008, 09:43 PM I still can't believe how many frags Bryan has going on after only 18 weeks! I'm jealous!! CarmieJo 03-19-2008, 09:13 PM Very nice Bryan! I managed to sweet-talk my camera battery and got some shots an hour ago. I was in a hurry, but they didn't come out too bad. :)
Misc Pictures and Stuff (http://www.cowgirlcoder.com/pictures/) Amphibious 03-19-2008, 10:57 PM Hey Bryan,
That tank is looking awesome. Good job. I recognize that skimmer as a Top Fathom. That's what I use and sell. They are a kick butt skimmer in my humble opinion.
Hey Sue,
That SW tank of yours is looking great under the PFO Galileo. Things are really showing off good color.
Your FW planted brings back fond memories from the good old days. I was a huge fan of live plants and planted all 20 of the aquariums in my basement back then, you know, when you were just a little girl. Heck, you might not even have been born, yet. :rotfl:
Dick :D I was chatting with Jay, the guy who helps me with tank maintenance, and happened to say something about the "really young" unemployment auditor I was dealing with. (I hate gov busywork, esp when I know there's nothing bad for them to find.) Turns out, he's about the same age as she is, and they're both young enough to be my kids. Oops.
Yeah, I love the lights, and Jay comments on how colorful my corals are every time he sees the tank. :D I've been talking them (and you) up to everybody who admires the tank!
The planted tank is a lot of fun, but hard to get a good pic of! I don't know what happened to the guppies, there's at least 40 fancy guppies in there and some of them are really getting colorful. Don't know how they all vanished for the photos!
Hey, I just spotted an asterina starfish in the reef tank! Cool! :wow: Jenn4183 03-21-2008, 11:21 PM Here are some pics of my tank.

ENJOY! Sheol 03-24-2008, 02:59 AM What kind of substrate is that in your FOLR? Amphibious 03-24-2008, 07:56 AM Things are looking good, Jenn! Jenn4183 03-24-2008, 01:11 PM Sheol - I'm not sure, we got that tank, humma humma triger, luner wrasse all for free. All i know is that it is white and black live sand. I guess they have had the tank w/ sand up and fish up and running for a couple years. and They needed to get rid of it so we took it. Good steel on my part :D
Thanks alot Amphibious!!! They are getting there slowly but surly. |
