View Full Version : Tubastrea Aurea AKA Sun Polyps veriann 06-02-2006, 10:41 AM these are by far some of the nicest corals i have seen in full boom. but the question i have is has anyone here kept them successfully for a period of time, and how would they survive with a clown & anems as tank mates only!
would it insite ww3?
i'll post some links for those that are unaware what these are!

i personally have to open the stills in a new window on this site, but it could be my opera browser that defined that!

definately worth a look anyways for anyone's interest sake cause these dont aquire food via photosynthesis, alas theres always a catch, they are not recommended for the less experienced! christensonjes 06-02-2006, 11:31 AM I do not have one but, There are alot of people in my reef club that has them. So I would assume they do good. I dont think they would do good in an sps tank because you have to feed them alot veriann 06-02-2006, 12:14 PM this would ring true fat walrus 06-02-2006, 06:33 PM with all the different foods available, sun corals are now considered easy in my area. i have one going 2 years now. veriann 06-02-2006, 06:42 PM fantastic, how does yours display?
u have a recent pic on hand somewhere?
how do u think they would survive with anem/tomato combo? fat walrus 06-02-2006, 07:01 PM i wouldn't keep it with a clown, too risky that the clown might try to use it as host. one of the keys is to try to keep it open during day. sorry no pics yet, all my budget goes to tanks. don't even own a camera. we have 2 large & 1 frag. 1 we've had for hm maybe 6 months the other for a little less. they do need to be fed often though with stuff like mysis & other meaty foods. I have a few Tubastrea coccinea, which is closely related, and as long as you feed them frequently, it'll do great. you may have a problem with the clowns eating the food before the Tubastrea do though (I lost an anemone that way), mine Tubastrea are slow to take the food in. m8298 06-03-2006, 09:13 PM Here's a dumb question: Do they even need light? gwen_o_lyn 06-03-2006, 09:22 PM Do they even need light?
Not a stupid question.
I can't see a reason why they would, but putting them in light isn't going to hurt them as long as they don't get sunburned. they don't need light, they are azooxanthellate. low light levels won't hurt them, but they really don't need any at all. m8298 06-03-2006, 09:48 PM Reason I ask, is I have a forty gallon fish-only that I don't even use lights on. It gets a decent amount of ambient light. I've seen sun corals at the LFS, and they always say that they need to be in cave or under a cliff, etc. I always thought "then why bother" at least in a reef tank.
And is "azooxanthellate" an actual term? gwen_o_lyn 06-03-2006, 09:51 PM sounds like sun polyps would be perfect! gwen_o_lyn 06-03-2006, 09:53 PM And is "azooxanthellate" an actual term?
:agree:
How about a sentence:
Azooxanthellate corals lack symbiotic algae and are broadly distributed in both shallow and deep waters. In addition to being found in the tropics, azooxanthellate corals can be found in polar, cold temperate, and warm temperate regions. great definition. i've had some Tubastrea under PC's for a brief period, it didn't affect them that i could see, i've had them with only ambient room light and they seemed to do fine, and i have them under NO T8's now, and they are fine. The only reason I have them under the T8's is because i'm growing some other low light corals in the same tank. I would avoid putting them in a bright spot in the tank if for no other reason that its valuable real estate fat walrus 06-03-2006, 11:05 PM i got mine under 250wt 20k HQI, and that tank is only 17 inches high. you gotta make sure it is not attacked by algae. veriann 06-04-2006, 06:39 AM if 20k swings towards the blueish spec, how does HQI(Halogen Quartz Iodine) orange type look interfere with this look, i dont know much about HQI, except for industrial applications.which is very orange looking! or i could be mental & am overlooking domestic bulbs?
also blubber, if ur up for it, can u post an info session in the alternative lighting thread abut this? |
