OK, I remember complaining about my gurgle here a couple of years ago and Seahorsedreams sent me a how-to that I think she wrote. I cant find it here, and I have renewed interest now that I have an idea of what one is. I dont even know how one workks. Do I put the hole in my overflow box? Is pvc screwed onto that inside my box? How does it stop gurgle, by letting more water out at a time?

kiddo, how far away is ampage from you. You have like THE biggest resource tool within driving distance. Trust me, i already know my sh^t, but if i was living that close to ampage, id be finding excuses to visit,( besides the drinking & BBQ of course) shop talk would always be on the agenda.

Ok, I remember the article now. I am even more confused!! A standpipe and a bulkhead are NOT the same thing? Both reduce the gurgling noise? OK, with a pre-drilled 60 gallon, what should I do??? :shout:

a standpipe is inside the tank. it can be used in an overflow to keep the siphon or it can be drilled through the bottom of the tank as drain and return. yours on the back, the box is on the inside of the tank? then you would drill a smallish hole in the 90 deg elbow coming out the back on the top of it and insert an air hose. this will let some air go down with the water. if your box is outside on the back i dont know really.

Laura, a bulkhead is the hardware around the hole through the glass.

ok, as soon as my battery charges up, I am going to take a picture! My overflow and return are on the inside of the tank. Two pipes, a waffled one for the water to go into the sump, and a pvc one attached to the return arm that comes up from the sump. So, I already have a stand pipe? sorry to sound so ridiculous!

you dont sound rediculous. it is very confusing,lol. so your tank is drilled from the bottom? then yes you have standpipes. the bulkheads are how those are attached to your tank. if you have an "overflow box" on the back of your tank that the pipes are attached too, you dont have standpipes. in this case you wouldnt need to worry about standpipes. they can make noise also but it is as easy to fix as drilling a hole. (or adding a T or elbow at the sump where the water comes in) your waffled pipe is probably that way to help the water flow down the sides of it and quiet it so the water isnt just "falling" into your sump. is this already hooked up and the noise is bothering you? if you want to see how and overflow box is attached, check out glassholes.com they have a video on how to install one in the bulkhead section. i hope i am not confusing you more than necesary,lol.

before, when you were asking about gurgling, did you just have a pipe that went over the back of your tank? a siphon? those can include a siphon break or an open pipe that comes up higher than the over tube to break the siphon in a powerfailure and to let air in. those can gurgle too but can be quieted.
