made my own food today....we will see if the fishies & all like it...here is what i put in it:

fresh halibut
fresh table shrimp
fresh cod
fresh clams
frozen brine
frozen mysis
frozen blood worms
fresh baby spinach
dried algae
bio-blend herbivore
formula one
selcon
phyto

i am freezing flat...i have some ice trays that make the tiniest cubes, but thought that might still be too much for the number of animals i have

christi, it was pretty easy...they seemed to really like it.....but, yea, the fish weren't too impressed w/ the baby spinach.....lol.....i figure it all gets eaten by something, so no biggie

just a thought..., prepared food are meant to make it easier of lazy blubber-gifted hobbyist like me. if you took so much care to purchase these foods fresh, why mess with it? for us, it would be like if you bought filet mignon and used it to make hamburger.

walrus, the reason is to not only acheive a good mix, but because when the food is all ground together, you have all different sizes of food....so, you are feeding the whole tank in one shot

good thoughts. i've made my own food before i got too busy with too many tanks. don't overlook flake food in your mix, its like the bread crumbs in a meatloaf. you also get the fish to accept flakes which is blessing if you ever have to use aan automatic feeder. i don't make my own food anymore, but i do create buffet. try chopping some bok-choy or kale. i use Zoecon, Marine Zoe, Marine C, and Garlic Extreme. don't use any cooked seafood or seafood blend from a market. the fish has a hard time digesting, especially the ones with artificial crab meat.

i am considering changing the selcon to zoe.....i "heard" the selcon can pollute the water...anyone else hear that?

ive used a list of recipe comb that i sourced years ago. u just add & chop to size what your targeting in your tank, fantasticly cheap & easy right dreams?

the list:

Nori : stir in at the end

Shrimp: chopped large or small

Scollop: minced for polyped coral

Squid/Calamari :great for anems, harder to chop fine

Crab: Real crab, not extender , multi target filler

Octopus: full nutritional value blending entire organism

Mussel: minced additive

Fry Food: fine suspension feeder

Yeast: 1 teaspoon per mixture batch, fine suspension feeder

Flake Food: Stir in at the end, full nutrinional value, medium dispersal

Bait Fish: fine/medium/large chopped

Vitamin supplements: all round nutritional value,1 teaspoon, bird multi-vit are cheaper than aquarium

Brine Shrimp: Frozen/fresh add toward the end of mix, target specific

Fish Eggs/Shrimp Eggs: Nutritional value, dont use russian caviar

Mysid Shrimp: nutritional value, add towards the end of mix

Chicken Egg Yolk: Cook, blend ,add towards the end of mix,nutritional value, also fine suspension

Zooplankton: frozen/fresh robs delight

Garlic Extract: scent enhancement, fish health tonic :)

Anaseed Extraca scent enhancement, feeding frenzy tonic on wild fish

Garden Greens: target trial & error, add separatley, most need blanching

Zoe is a mineral extract and Selcon is a fatty acids. the Kent version of selcon is Zoecon. I like the kent version better. many people have said that selcon can cause water parameter issues.

oh, and one more thing, i'm not sure if its true. i was told that spinach has too much iron for fish...mess with one of their organs. also some problems with beans and sprouts.

veriann, thanks for the recipe....yea, it actually was quicker to make than i thought it would be....and you aren't buying a lot, so the prices were deffinately right....and they are really loving it
