they only come out at night

I bought a piece of LR with a bunch of mushrooms on it.
There are two anemone things that seem to only come out at night when it's dark.
I don't know if the are glass anenomes or something else and if they are good or bad.
If you can help identify, it would be great ...
They are only about 1/4 - 1/2" in length right now.

From further research, I think they may be tube anemones, as they only come out at night and seem to have a leathery tube ...
Are aiptasia nocutrnal as well or do you usually see them during the day?

I've had good luck with Peppermint Shrimp.

When I saw this thread title, I though I'd find Edgar Winters Band fans! We'll find out the mean age of the constituency here by the responsese to this post!

I agree I have been fortunate to have peppermints that eat the aptasia and then again I have had others that don't even come near it. I ti hit or missbut definitely worth a shot to rid these pesky anemones out of the tank.

Ryan,

What ever you do don't let them get out of control if they are aptasia. You may want to put that piece of LR in QT until you know what you are dealing with.

Can you tell if they are sharing a common base?

If sufficient plankton exists Aiptasia colonies can be split 50/50 with half of them extended during the day and the other half coming out at night otherwise they'll tend to be out during the day as they do host some zooxanthellae.

If you can, pull them out and keep that rock in a seperate container with a bit of flow (airstone or small powerhead). If you don't own a quarantine tank yet, this might be a good excuse to go pick up a little 10g tank system, a small powerhead, and a spare heater. A single normal output flourescent tube is fine for QT, just make sure it's 6400K or bluer (is bluer a word?)

Thanks for the suggestions.
Can't tell if the share a base, but it doesn't look like it.
One actually seems to have 'died' or disappeared.
I'm in the process or researching for a 40 -50 gallon tank ... and will definatley set up a small QT when i get it going.
Thanks again
Ryan
p.s. I have never seen them during the day, and I do work from home so get to stare into my little 3 gallon pico lots...
