Okay I'm just plain Jealous of all you guys with your scraping of Coraline Algae since I'm tired of Scraping slime and pulling Hair Algae and would really like to start scraping Coraline Algae.
Well I'm in neither boat, I've got plating green algae growing everywhere in my tank, Coralline in red, green, purple, orange, yellow and pink....even what to my eyes is an aqua blue color but every bit stays on the rocks.
My aquarium is starting to turn into a nightmare. I'm going to pick up the phosphate sponge and some Red Slime Algae chemical killer today I woke and up its like the blob. :-(

you, bad coralline.....get off the glass and stay on the live rocks where you belong! i'm serious......if you don't shape up, you're going to bed without any calcium....you hear me? you want light?
that the kinder, gentlier modern method. too bad that coralline wasn't around in the old days of belts and paddles! why you useless coralline.......just wait until your father gets home.........if you think i'm mad, just wait until he hears about this!
For one to grow coraline, one only has to look at the other animals u are dosing for! the elements u would pick for good growth include the likes of calcium, magnesium, strontium, iodine, boron & the list goes on! it just happens to be what coraline algae needs to grow as well. products like purple up are a major boost in elements yes,> who has the chemical listing of this product so we can see first hand? i'll just throw a few flags in the play if i can be so bold!
firstly lets take an element> lets go strontium this time, in nature its at an equalibrium of 8ppm, in a closed system like our tanks values can jump because of all the extras we add! & how are u going to know unless u test for it! up to & past 15ppm & id start to become concerned!
second point i'd like to make is coraline although it has so many benifical points in its corner, the fact remains its a crust forming over the the LR, thus capping any pore spaces on that LR. any bacteria inside these pores are effectively killed! plus unless u have some funky urchin to chew threw it, its going to be there for quite some time! yes bacteria populations grow on top of this crust, but in theroy (my opinion only guys) u are losing alot of collony space if u go crazy with these booster products!
store that in your useless information centers will you! lol
you guys just had to encourage it didn't you...... I found a little spot of purple growing on my back pane this AM. it's only about an 1/8 inch across but I know what it means.
I just read this whole thread and all the while thinking I was going to have to pound out another lecture about the indiscriminate dosing of chemicals into our aquariums. And this one, Purple Up, (Or burble up or throw up) just to hurry up the growth of Coraline algae which, if given a wee bit of patience will grow naturally. Coraline has never failed me in it's quest to bless my rock with beautiful hues of color. Sure enough it's done it again in the 135. I hate wasting money on unnecessary things, especially chemical additives that I cannot test for!
So picture this: Amp bows low to pay respect to the superior wisdom of the mighty V from the land down under.
