Patrick, if it is a slimy looking layer covering everything it sounds like
cyanobacteria, AKA red slime. Although you can use some products that will kill it, if you have not taken care of the root problem it will come right back.
Can you give us some specs on your tank. How long have you had it, livestock list, flow, lights, water change schedule,
pH,
ammonia,
nitrite,
nitrate,
phosphate, etc. This info and pictures will help us get you on the road to a beautiful tank again.
