Yes, the paper towel trick does work remarkably well.

I'm hoping the bubbles reduce/go away after a couple of weeks. For now, I'm going to put the skimmer onto a timer so it runs at night and when I'm at work. That way it'll get a good 16 hours a day of action. I'm also thinking that having it off during feedings is probably also a good thing.
