I tried that when the pump on my canister on my old
FW tank died. Didn't work, there's just too much water to push.
A 100 micron filter sock would pull out pretty fine particles, plus it's cheaper and easier to clean. They can still generate
nitrates if not changed or cleaned regularly, but not nearly as bad as a canister.
