Update to my Dilema

Well, being the intelligent individual that I am, ahhem I found some appropriate plastic material and cut myself two small ventilated sections to repair the damaged tower overflow. I worked with a product called "Hold Fast" as I had worked with it when I did some of the aquascaping with live rock for my tank. It worked pretty well and when I was finished, I felt quite pleased with myself. That was until I looked up and the level of water in my DT had risen to the point of me freaking out at the possibility of a deluge! I quickly removed one section of the repair that I had done and the water level planed out. Whew! I now realize that perhaps I need to tweek the pump's water flow? I really need some help here as I sure am not gonna get it from the LFS. The only thing they have helped me with is to empty my pocket book and discourage me. How does one adjust the volume of water/flow from their main pump? Or should I use a plastic type screen instead of the two ventilated plates I made? Help! I'm drowing in ignorance
