I use sugar fine sand. My
DSB has shrunk by about .5" over 20 months or so. I think that some of this may be compaction but
aragonite also disolves slowly to buffer your tank. I would start with 5-5.5" if I was doing it again. I am going to add another 50# which should plump it back up. I would not mix the 2 types of substrate.
